I disagree if your saying that a .270 in not a great deer cartridge.
I could very easily say that in most "Deer Hunters" opinions a 300 Win Mag is overkill for deer. Everyone has an opinion!

I would think that the 7mm short magnums will do better than the 270 because they are so close in size but the 7mm will shoot heavier bullets which many people like to shoot on larger game such as moose and elk.

Yes you can duplicate factory 300 WSM loads, but it takes work! The secret is to use low ballistic coefficient bullets that allow more powder volume to be loaded. The Grand Slam by Speer and the Swift A-Frame are two that WSM loaders have had a lot of success with. There are even a couple of 180-grain loads that exceed (barely) 3000 fps in a 24-inch barrel. This is the same performance I get out of my 300 Win Mag with the same bullet.

fight4yourguns, I didn't say that the 270 Win wasn't a great deer cartridge. However, the 270 Win does owe a debt to Jack O'Conner, the man who championed it shamelessly. Otherwise it may be in the same on-again, off-again limbo as some other fine cartridges such as the 280 Rem, or it could have fallen by the wayside altogether.

I like the new WSM. I would like to have one. Kinda wished I got one instead of the 300RUM. But I am not one of those guys that refuses to change wishing things would stay back in the 1900's. New rounds means new toys for me to load for. Can't stop time, it just keeps rollin and rollin.

Frizzellr, So by that reasoning we need to credit Elmer Keith for the popularity of the 30.06??
I don't think so, both the 30.06 and the .270 popularity is based on # of rifles sold and used in the field. Face it they are both super cartidges.

fight4yourguns,back up and take a breath. Where did I say the 270 Win was not a super cartridge? I am not trying to argue with you. The 280 Rem is also a great cartridge, agueably better than the 270 Win as far as versatility, but has nowhere near the popularity. Why? It was never the pet cartridge of a well-known gun writer. As far as the 30-06 goes, name me a cartridge except for the 30-40 Krag adopted by the military that hasn't been successful in civilian shooting. Yes, it too is a super cartridge. My original point is this, the 270WSM offers nothing over the 270 Win which could not be better served by the 7mm, or 300WSM, therefore it will not find a niche.

Whats your opinion on the new WSM 270. The stats look prety impresive. The same 130 gr bulets the 270 WIN is around 3050fps and the WSM 270 is 3275fps.

Guns are alot like cars,New ones come and go every year.I shot a 270 win. Have killed a pile of game with the gun, before I got my 270
I hunted 14 yrs. with a marlin 30/30,killed alot of deer and turkey with the gun, only difference I saw between the two is you have alot more range out of the 270.Fact is any cal.of high powered rifle is traveling around three thousand fps.or better, put that speeding bullet through the heart of any living creature and it will die, dead is dead ,what you shoot it with is strictly personal prefernce.

RE: 270 WSM.
Let's face it many cartridges are bought by sheer popularity and not on their merits. Many people buy cartridges with no knowledge of ballistics simply because someone else usually a friend or relative has one.History and popularity does not make a cartridge perform any better but it does sell guns. This is the obstacle any new caliber has to overcome even if it offers advantages over existing cartridges.Does anyone honestly believe the 30-06 and 270 would ever be so popular if they were introduced today with all the other cartridges to choose from instead of so many years ago when they had so little competition?
