Finally got the pics from my other forum, "What gun is this?"

The star with the arrow through it does appear to be soviet. Like I said, it might not be issued. I only said that because my great grandfather carried it on the field. With all of the history lessons on this gun, I'm beginning to believen that this was not US military weaponry.

There were a fewUS soldiers who carried Mosin Nagants at one point in time or otherin incursions in eastern Russiaor station in Alaska in the early 20th century but those were Remington or Westinghouse Mosins. FWIW, a few hundred thousand Mosin m91s were made by Remington and Westinghouse for the Tzar of Russia, but were never delivered because of the Bolshevic revolution. Some of these were used at one time or another by US troops, but most were surplused off a long time ago.
If you G-Grandfather was from Finnland, then he might have carried the particular rifle you have.

The above picture shows the [SA] stamp on the left side of the receiver.
Below: overall picture of Finnish capture 91/30. Note the front sight is the Finnish blade type instead of the typical russian hooded post.

Note the stock splice under the rear sight. The finns made 2piece stocks spliced together, I'm betting that this is the reason why yours was cut so short...
