If you can find one in that price range, definitely go for the Savage 210F Slug Warrior. If not, an 870 w/ slug bbl.

I know this is way off base but is a very inexpensive way out . If you have a good suitable shotgun with screwin chokes I belive that hastings has a rifled choke as well as other supliers . Ofcourse I can't fault a fellow for "needing" a new gun.

In that price range I would suggest the two you are looking at, the savage or the H&R. I would also go with a 20 ga over the 12 ga. They seem to have an accuracy advantage to me because the twist rates and bullets are very similar to that of what the inline MLs are using.

And newer 20 ga loads have plenty of power to kill a deer out to 150-200 yards if you can shoot one that far accurately.

I actually own three...... Remingtons 1187 and870. I also have a Mossberg 500. Only the 1187 and the Mossberg have rifled barrels and scopes. The 870 I use in the thick stuff, a smooth bore barrel and iron sites. I'm loyal to my Remingtons but to tell you the truth my Mossberg is more accurate, I just shoot it better. I use foster slugs in all three. I may pick up some sabots and shoot thru the Mossberg this year.

If you have a shotgun already and have a mod choke screw in all you need to do is buy the new FEDERAL TRU-BALL slugs..they have to been seen to be believed...they are designed for the smooth bore and shoot groups as good as my rifled barrel..they are the best going..I've tried at least 7 other types and none even came close out of the smooth bore..I shot a big ole OHIO whitetail last year with one and smashed it in it's tracks..TRY EM ...save yourself the money for very little if any gain.....

I've got a really good but inexpensive slug gun. It is a mossberg 695 bolt action gun with a rifled barrel. It is accurate with lightfield slugs out to 100-125 yards and inexpensive. I bought a used mossberg 695 witha leupold 1-4x20 scope for 200 or 250. So far in two years using it I've killed three deer. One at 50 yards, one at 18 yards, and the other at 70 yards. The last one went the furthest at around 40 yards. The other two went down where they were hit. This gun/slug combo is just devasting.

My H&R Ultra Deluxe in 20ga. should be here this week, everyone that owns one loves them

I'm suprised hearing so many recommendations on the 20ga. H & R. Does it have the "knock down" power?

Believe me it has the knockdown power.Ive flattened quite a few with mine,mostly neck shots and shoulder shots within 100 yards.

Go with the 870
