The above poster was referring to the Savage Model 16 rifle, which is a short action stainless synthetic rifle.

As for stainless rifles...I love them. But, even a stainless rifle will rust if it is notproperly maintained and oiled. Also, blued rifles hold up quite well "IF" they're properly oiled and maintained.

Things to avoid with your rifles:[ol][*]hand contact directly withthe metal[*]never handlewith dirty hands[*]never handleafter eating food, especially salty foods like chips[*]never handlewith bug spray or sun screenon your hands[*]never clean with a degreaser, without reapplying oil[*]degreasers remove all oil which in necessary to protect the finish[*]clean immediately after each use, wiping with a light oil like Exxoz, Breakfree or Sheath[*]If handled or used, always wipe down with a lightly oiled cloth[/ol]Some manufacturers stainlessseem more prone to rusting:[ol][*]Ruger and Remington do notseem as prone to rust[*]Savage stainless seems more prone to rusting than others[/ol]

IMO stainless is much over rated as an allweather material.

While barrel life is greater it's not as much more than we thought and it seems to me that the biggest asset we get in stainless is the lack of bluing required.

Everyone to their own but my stainless rifles are sold!

I like my stainless Ruger, got it for under $500 and it's a good feeling having a solid and durable rifle.

Yes, even stainless will rust, just not near as quickly or easily as most blued rifles. I too prefer a black scope with my stainless rifle. Since most scopes are made of aluminum you don't really have to worry about them rusting, but the rings sure will! Since I neglect my rifle more than I should that's the one spot I have to watch for rust. Most of the rust I see on my rifle is in areas like between the stock and metal where moisture can be held. Unlike my blued guns if it gets wet during a week of hunting I won't take it apart to clean, just leave it in a shop overnight where a wood stove is burning and that sucks all the moisture out of the rifle. I'll then clean it thoughly after the week of hunting. My blued guns had to be cleaned and oiled immediatly after coming in from the rain else they'd start to rust.

One other note about stainless is they are not as strong as blued. Not quite sure how that would affect anything, maybe shorter barrel life (5,000 rounds vs 10,000 - totally making those numbers up though). I'm sure someone else has more info on that aspect as I'm not metallurgist.
