Colorado Lucky Dog, certainly not trying to start an argument. Here's the deal...I'm 31 andhave been hunting since I was 10. Even though I've managed to take quite a few deer over the years with all sorts of calibers, I've never really stuck with one. I have a habit of buying and selling guns so I can try new stuff out.
Now, as I get a little older and more set in my ways, I want to get a rifle that I stick with, and I know I want it to be either a .270 or .30-06

I just like hearing personal experiences/opinions from folks who have used one or both of these calibers more than I have to help me make my decision on which caliber fits me best.

I CANNOT imagine using 200 gr bullets for deer. You must love recoil. I have NEVER seen a instance where a 200 grain bullet was needed for whitetails or hogs.

"Asking which is better is akin to the ancent Greek custom of debating how many spirits can dance on a needle head" - Calibers of the World
One has a little less recoil. The other can be loaded up enough to knock the animal into the next county.
IT DOESN'T MATTER!
THEY WILL BOTH DO THE SAME JOB!
PICK ONE!

As a new member to this forum, I would like to say thank you for your responses to the question.
For the couple of folks who said to "PICK ONE" or "do your own search", I'm not sure why you took the time to even respond.

What if we had someone, a teenager or even an adult, who was new to hunting and wanted to give our favorite hobbie a try? How do you think they would percieve us as hunters if we answered their question the way a couple of you have?

I know that the .270 VS. .30-06 question has been debated to death....but new people to our sport might not.

in all honesty, with the ranges considered by the asking party, it doesn't really matter which one you choose. It just depends on whether he wants a deer rifle or a more versatile all around rifle cartridge.

ya kniw theres practically no difference if you ask me, i use a .30-06 just for that little extra punch. i have a browning bar, so recoil isnt that great since its a semi auto, but once you get to the bolts, theres more kick than a .270. a .30-06 is great for everything since you can get grain weights from i think 50 up to 220, so you can take anything from coyotes to bears.

Oops! On the previous page I typed 250 when I meant 150 ... most probably know what I meant...I have edited it.
