how old? i would sugest the 30-06 it can get a lil painfull after 30+ shots but it has such a wide range of hunting its amazing! you can shoot from less then a 50 grain to a 250 grain thats varmit to elk and up, i have one and its my "everything under the sun, gun"
i would sugest a savage, its a cheap gun that is ideal for the first time hunter, every thing on it is simple, well built and most of all accurate!

I started my kids on the 22;s and graduated to 30-30's. By the age of
13, both daughter and son had graduated to 270 and 06 . Went ahead and got them ole M70's....they will last them for a lifetime.
This way, they are ready for deer and elk.

If you're an absolute starter, then a good .22LR is the best bet. They're great for getting to know how to shoot well and are a lot of fun at the range. They're also great for small game like squirrels, rabbits, and various other critters.
If you're ready for something more, consider a .243 from Savage or Remington. The recoil of that cartridge is pretty light for a centerfire, and it works very well on deer.

Tyler, its really hard to tell...What do you intend to do with this gun??How old are you?? What is your level of experience?? Do you have a mentor??What state do you live in and do you intend to hunt instate??? If you are going to hunt are we talking squirrels? deer? turkeys? doves? Or do you just want to target shoot and plink??

I would suggest the .30-30 either a new Marlin or an old used Winchester. The .30-30 has been, historically, the classic woods rifle for generations. There is just something about carrying an old lever gun in the thick woods.... It can't be explained.... Trust me - once you pick up a .30-30 you'll fall in love with it.
