I would suggest the .30-30 either a new Marlin or an old used Winchester. The .30-30 has been, historically, the classic woods rifle for generations. There is just something about carrying an old lever gun in the thick woods.... It can't be explained.... Trust me - once you pick up a .30-30 you'll fall in love with it.
