How affective is a 20 ga on coyotes, and out to what range?
I have a 24F, and my wife has an old H&R in 20 ga.
I have been using a .243 wssm, but am interested in carrying a shotgun for the ones that run up on us. The brush is thick in some places. Too thick for my scope.
I did try a search before I asked....

The 2 most important things to consider are ammo selection, and choke.
I reccomend lead shot from #2-4o buckshot. As far as choke goes, both of the shotguns you listed comes from factory with fixed chokes. get some ammo like I reccomended and pattern them. I would venture to guess at maximum 30-40 yards.

Javabird17...Thank you. I do own a .223, and love it. But I am just wondering how effective my shotgun barrel on my 24F is, and should my wife ever join me, is her 20 ga suitable as well.
salty, I do have a small handful of slugs. I have not used them tho.....they were on clearance, and I grabbed a few. They are 2 3/4" 5/8 oz slugs...thoughts?
stalkingbear......Thank you. I will do just that.

I have two Savage 24s. One in .222 over 20 ga and one is 30/30 over 20 ga.
I have shot and seen shot three coyotes with BBs from the 20 and all ran off. One I switched to the .222 and nailed him before he got away.
I now have some 20 ga AAAA #3 buck that I think shoud put a coyote down at close range.
When calling "dogs" in bushy areas sometimes the shooting is real close. I normally call with a partner who sits 40 or 60 yards down wind of the caller and gets most of the shooting at coyotes circling to scent the situation.

The second guy was normally my cousin who also had a Savage 24 in .222 over 20. Sometimes it was my brother with his 30/06 or a 12 ga and BBs

slugs and buckshot work best. u should probably buy in 3" or 3 1/2 if u gun can handle it. i am also starting to hunt coyotes w/ a shotgun. sounds like a lot of fun. for buckshot u can shoot to about 50 yards or maybe even 65 if u have the right combination of chokes, shells, etc. but i wouldn't put on too tight of a choke or the pellets might deform. for slugs u can probably shoot out to 100 yards w/ the rihgt shells. but make sure u nkow where ur bullet is gonna hit if u dont have a scope.
