rem 870 or mossberg 835 both are tough as nails and time proven designs, i have one of both, i bought the 835 to shoot 3.5" they are both great guns and i really prefer the 870 simple for the feel. you wont go wrong with either, and you should be a ble to find either for under 300

You can get Mossberg 500s' all day long here for 199.00+ tax. The 835 is awsome but, who really needs 3.5s' unless you are stretching the range on ducks or geese? Plus that 3.5 incher stomps you as bad or worse than a 10ga. Another plus for the 500 is, if some time down the road you want a rifled slug or muzzleloader barel. They make them for the 500. But no muzzelloader barrels for the 835 or 870. Each barrel is about 150 orless a pop.

Mossberg or Remington. I have a Mossberg 835 that has more round through it then i can count. Prob somewhere in the 10,000 range. And it shows them but still shoots great. Kicks like a mule but always gets the job done. Ive dropped it down hills, on rocks, its been rained on, snowed on, fell in creeks with me and never let me down. I was recently thinkin of selling most of my gunsbut that is one i could never part with.

the remington 870 would problably be your best bet, the remingtonis a very reliable, accurate, and is a fairly nice looking gun which doesnt hurt. the 870 magnum field/deer combo will run you up about 300$ but is well woth it.
good luck

remington 870 in 12g at walmart is roughly 240 dollars. I'd highly recommend it. I love mine.
