Savage 30-06 w/ scope strap $250 at walmart
I was looking to retire a 30-06 my Dad handed down to me some time ago. Most of my other rifles are Rugers but I wanted something inexpensive but accurate that I could bang around in the woods with and not worry about. The Savage came to mind. So I went to walmart and the clerk pulled a gun out. I said "how much?" He said "$250" I said "I want it right now!"
Free floated barrel, glass stock, bolt action, el cheap simmons scope (that I gave to brother in-law), non glare barrel, 7.5 lbs and a cheap strap. The trigger feels good too. The only complaint I have is that the safety works kind of hard but I figure if I work it a couple of hundred times it should loosen up. Savage is suppose to have an excellent rep for accuracy.....can't wait to try it out.
I saw that they had a 243 in stock but the price of that was in the mid 300 range so I passed. If the 243 had been $250 I would have left the store with two rifles.
I even got $30 off the scope that I put on it because it was the last one and it was a display model. It was a burris elite with that rain coating. It is not a leupold but I think it will hold up. I'm looking forward to giving it a work out.

I used my new .30/06 Savage package gun to fill my caribou tags recently. I have nothing but good to say about it. Take that with a grain of salt, my last big game rifle was a Mosin Nagant 91/59.
I am leaving the simmons econo scope on until it gives me trouble or until I buy a .22 rimfire. I'll stick the simmons on the .22 and tell the wife I need a scope for my hunting rifle. A Bushell Elite 3200 3x9 should do the trick nicely when/if the time comes. I'm hearing a lot of positive things about these scopes. A good quality, fogproof scope that won't break the bank. Additional input is welcomed.

Start watching your local Walmart. They usually clean house at the end of the year and move the guns that have been in the display to make room for next years models. I've seen the Savage package guns for as low as $199, usually after the 1st of the year.
