I think it is one of the best choices for a "nearly everything" rifle cartridge. But the smaller stuff (smaller than little deer and big coyotes) and the bigger stuff (bigger than medium/small elk) are best left to other cartridges. I'm not saying that the 30/06 shouldn't be used for the smaller and bigger stuff....but its certainly not the best choice in the extremes of smaller and larger.
I constantly mull over what it would take to have the fewest but most versatile # of rifles in my cabinet. The 30/06 would be amoung them that is for sure. I have the smaller stuff covered with my .243 and my 6.5's, and the middle to larger medium stuff is covered with my 30/06 and my 8mm/06, ... but I seriously lack the punch of larger calibers and more powerful cartridges in my cabinets. That is why I keep trying to narrow my choices for at least one more cartridge....perhaps a .375 H&H, perhaps a 9.3 X 74R ........choices choices choices
You need a .338 Win Mag, my friend.
Yep ... that's another of the many fine cartridges I'm kicking around as a possible choice..

"Jack of all but master of none". I'd take a 7mm rem mag or 280 rem over a 3006 any day of the week. IfI just had to have a .308 cal bullet the 300 is where I'd hang my hat on.

Will it work most certainly, just not a cartridge I grew a liking too or felt the needI just had tohave.

I love my .338, I use the same dope adjustments at long range as the .300 Win Mag, only, I add 2 for the .338, and it does awesome, at 300-500 yards.

Out to 300 yards, it capable of taking all NA game animals. Its done it countless 100's of times. Deer and other medium game you can tack on another 100 yards if your capable, the rifle is too. Bullets heavier than 180 grains are seldom needed. For the big bears, maybe the 200 grain NP.

James, I think a lot of people overlook the old' 30-06 in favor of cartridges, like the .300 RUM, and the other Ultra Mags, the 30-06, is just about the perfect cartridge for hunting NA.
