It would have to be perfect weather conditions , a solid rest, and one heck of a trophy buck before I ever considered firing over 300y.
Deer for meat can be shot at short ranges 99% of the time (imho). So the need for the long shot on a deer is few and far between.
That being said, the .270 will still kill a deer in it's tracks with correct shot placemant at twice that distance

Look at the ballistics charts. The point at which the bullet falls to the 2,000 fps impact velocity is effectively the maximum range.
If this were tru then that would put you at roughly 350 - 400 yards with a standard 270 without looking at a ballistics chart. I would venture to say you could make a kill shot at 500 - 600 yards hovever becuase I believe you only need 1,500 fps and roughly 1200 foot pounds of energy with a well placed shot.

Personally, even with my 7 Mag, I would not take a shot past 700 yards even if it were the buck of a lifetime. Of course that would be about 45inches high over the back using a bdc reticle and on a perfectly calm day.

I would also add that being with a more powerful scope, something like a 4 -12 x 50. You might also need a second shot to follow.

when i first bought a 270 ,it was the only centerfire i owned. i loaded it down to 100grn bullets for varmint hunting. i killed a few thousand groundhogs with it . i really learned what this caliber can do. once i had learned with the light bullets ,i moved up to long range shooting with heav ier 140grn bullets. if you are going to kill cleanly at 400-500-600yds or farther with any gun you must shoot it and learn the gun, and see if you are capable of doing it. it takes a good gun,but you must learn how to get a good rest in the field. there are lots of things out there to help you do this. like shooting sticks and bipods. if you put the bullet where it needs to be the 270 will do its job.

I know it is at least 450 yds for mulies. Last mulie hunt day before I had to leave I had a nice 4x4 across the canyon. Four hours later the closest we could get before it got to dark was 437 yds. Having a good very solid rest and shooting 130 gr Nosler BT over 55 gr of IMR4350, that mulie never knew what hit him.
Would I recommend anyone taking that shot. Absoultely not. But I was practicing all summer at 300 and 400 yds and had a Burris scope with the ballistic plex andI was pretty confidentI could make the shot under the conditions.

That distance would be right around 450 yards with a 130 gr. spitzer starting out at 3100 fps. The main problem with engaging a big game animal with a small bore, high velocity rifle is that has an impact velocity much below 2,000 fps, the bullet is only capable of making a permanent wound channel the size of its frontal diameter. It probably isn't going to expand a whole lot at low impact velocities anyway; so you wind up with a much smaller wound channel than you would have at the 2400 fps impact velocity.

Thanks everyone. I'll try out a few different brands of ammo and see what I can come up with. Is there any specific styles that work good at these distances that I should make a point to get and try? I already planned to try a handfull of different styles for different ranges. I may look into buying a larger caliber for the 500+ shots anyways. What do you all think of the ranges of a Rem. 7mm mag? That is what I used to shoot and learned to deer hunt with but the gun wasn't mine. I really liked that gun and it shot great so I wouldn't mind getting one anyways, plus then I'll have a big game gun if I can ever get away for a hunt! I never shot anything further than 250-300 yards so I don't really know how it is in long range but I'm sure it will out shoot the .270 win. Thanks again,
Brandon

For extreme long range deer hunting, the 7 STW is hard to beat.

Look at the ballistics charts. The point at which the bullet falls to the 2,000 fps impact velocity is effectively the maximum range.
If this was the case, The 30-30 wouldn't be any good at 100yrds.Along with 50 cal muzzle loaders. The bullet (energy) has more to do with effective kills rather than the speed velocity. Look at a 44. 1300 FPS. Many kill deer at a 100yrds easly with it. Then again, I am just starting to understand ballistics. Heres a chart from remington that's easy to read and compare ballistics.

I can't say I know anything about that caliber, never heard of it. I'll do some searching and see ifcan find out more about it. Do you know if Savage makes a model in this cartridge? I have taken a likeing to their guns and accuracy. Thanks Roskoe.
