New Addition To The Family --- Barrett 99A1 in 50 BMG

Wow, what a rush!IMO, the recoil is quite mild (thanks to a 28 pound rifle and a major muzzlebrake); however, that muzzlebrake is the item that creates the real challenge to handling this rifle. The “shock wave” that slaps you in the face is easier to handle than severe shoulder recoil, but it is distracting! I’ve been around obnoxious braked rifles at the range before, but nothing with this kind of effect.
Here is the culprit....

Another View....

Did some shooting at 400 and 800 yards, a whole different world for me.

Amazing how easythe "targeting system"is compared to the old "hold over" methodology, the scope has external MOA turrets,

Bushnell Elite 320010X Fixed (Recommended/Provided From Factory)
30 MOA Ramp
So....
Range the target,
Reference the chart,
Dial in the elevation adjustment in MOA quarter clicks (no wind--- dead calm), and
Hold dead on,
Reach out and touch something.

As I mentioned before your post....
Elk huntingcould be done with it, but it would come at a "price" that I'm guessing you are probably unfamiliar with,it would be kind of anedgysort of project....
My son and I talked about it and it would require:
-- An extra horse,
-- Risk to the asset,
-- Right kind of sniper nest in a high elk traffic zone (gotsome of those)
-- African style shooting sticks
-- Walker Game Ears or Sport Ears
-- Barnes TSX 600 grainers
Would work best with:
-- A second team memberto range and calculate andprovideMOA ballistic inputs
-- A second rifle to provide a viable option for the quicker developing situations (like an elk stampede thruone's position or evenhurried elk under 300 yards)
So, not real likely....
Generally a nice long distance target rifle and something to broaden ones horizons with....
It is good to have options, you?
