Default RE: Shooting Offhand?

I practice in the offhand with a vertical support (tree trunk), but only rarily w/o any rest at all. Why?

First, off-hand shots (w/o support) should be avoided whenever possible because it's the least supported and accurate method. The only off-hand shot I'd take would be if the range were short <50 yards and i had no other choice. The thing is, if you are in an area that is so open you can't find anything to use as a rest, chances are you're either going to be spotted and spook the game, or you'll have plenty of time to take a knee.

I think one should practice all types of shooting positions, but should concentrate on practicing for shooting scenarios faithful to those you'll likely encounter in your hunting environment. I hunt deer in medium to dense timber, which always provides something to prop the gun on in a pinch.
