A buddy of mine says that you can get a .270 weatherby in a synthetic stock for around $400 bucks. I didn't think you could get a weatherby for under a thousand. I was wondering if anyone knows if this is true or not. Also, if it is true what is it called, and is it still a good quality rifle. I am in college and don't have all that much money, but I would like to get one for christmas or something if it is true.

I don't think that gun is chambered in .270 Wby Mag, but if it is...
I have shot that cartridge at all types of game and have made kills with it at all practical ranges and can say firsthand that it may be one of the best all-around, long-range big game cartridges ever devised. The recoil is very manageable and the bullet flies wickedly fast. Accuracy is top-notch.
For the one rifle hunter, the .270 Weatherby just may be the ultimate in versatility and performance.

The Vanguard is made in .270, 30-06, 7mm rem mag, and 300 wea mag. Ask him if it is weatherby in 270 Win. or a 270 wea mag. If it's .270 Win then it's a 99.9% chance it's the Vanguard. For 400 bucks it's probably the Vanguard anyway. Don't let the price fool you though this gun is suppose to be a real shooter. It's made by Howa in Japan under Weatherby quality control standards, and "real" Weatherbys were made in Japan for many years.

I bought a Weatherby Vanguard at Wal-Mart for $388. It was synthetic and chambered for the 300 Weatherby Mag. It's a very nice rifle and I shot a Sako for 15 years before I got this.

Thanks. I talked to my friend, and it was the Walmart special for $388. He got the regular .270 in the synthetic stock. I am going to wait to see how well he likes his, and if he does. I am going to get me one.

Yep, it's the wally world special. I do own the 270 WBY Accumark with a brake. It shoots almost as flat as my .257 WBY. Both kill deer. Of course a .223 will kill a deer if your placement is good. That's a different topic. Howa make decent guns....that's what the $400 special WBY is.
