I would also recommend that you get a standard cartridge. Mainly because of the cost of the ammo. You want a gun that is cheap to shoot so that you'll actually shoot it. I'd suggest a .308 or .30-06.

However if the deal is too good to pass up, maybe 50% of retail, then go for it.

The 7mmremmag offers nearly the same ballistics with a much larger selection of factory loads.It also offers theoption of using heavier bullets if you choose to hunt larger game in the future.

Yep....stick with a standard cartridge is good advice, but if you have a real hankering for the .270 WSM, go for it. I shot a .270 for years. Bought a .270 WSM two years ago. I really like it, but the ammo isn't cheap. You can usually find ammo for a .270 or 30-06 on sale and factory loads for those rifles these days is excellent. I like the .270 WSM a lot, but my son has pretty much layed claim to it. Montana is open country, and it will "reach out and touch them". I bought a Tikka and am very pleased with the accuracy out of the box, how it handles, etc.

In my neck of the woods , Walmart sells ammo for the 270 WSM. Its really no more expensive than any other Magnum shell. Cost of ammo is not a big deal unless you are going to shoot it a lot. Even then, places like Midway have ammo sales and you can stock up then. Most all the bigger sporting goods stores have them all the time. Or set up and reload for it.

I would go with the 270 wsm. I bought mine this summer and have put about 200 rounds throught it and love it.

Well, I had no intention of buying a short mag when I started looking. I just stopped at a gun shop in a nearby town and that's what they happened to have in my price range. I've been looking for something in the 270, 7mm, 308 range but to no avail. The ammo cost is the biggest drawback I can see at$30.00 + per box[:@]

Mine arefrom $20-$25 at Bass Pro Shop or Cabelas. Look in the Winchester and Federal brand for the WSM offerings.

The WSM cartridge is not cheap to purchase in factory loads. If you plan on alot of shooting, buy the regular 7-Mag or .308 rifles -- then get into reloading.

What would be the reason not to own a 270WSM as a first rifle? Just curous as to the reasoning. As far as getting the job done, the 270,or 308 would be considered fine for use for the same kind of hunting, however the 270 WSM is certainly in the same class.

Just picked up a 270wsm in a Tika-T3 this week. Went to the range this morning and zeroed it in. Worked up a few loads and one of the loads was grouping around a 1/2 inch at 100yds. I'm pretty impressed with the cal. allready. Have shot a 270 win for years and nothing wrong with that cal either. The 270wsm does have a bit more recoil than the 270 win. I do my own reloading so the cost isn't much more than the 270 win, it just takes alittle more powder. Zeak

Ammo cost isn't a big deal to me. I don't have the opportunity or time (too many other hobbies) to do a lot of shooting. Couple trips to the in-laws to shoot out in the county and deer season itself would be my only shooting.
