Knock Down power is just a miss-leading term.

A larger bullet can do more damage than a smaller bullet of the same shape...

A bullet with more velocity will travel/penetrate bettter than a bullet with less velocity...

bigger bullets at faster speeds have more potential to do more dammage...But Small projectiles at slow speeds kill none the less.

Q.Which bullet would i rather get shot with a .22 or a .50?

A.Neither

Big guns are more fun to shoot tho>>[8D]

I cant see newtons law applying to this, the rifle's weight messes that up. A 30-06 bullet shot from a 5lb and 15 lb gun will be very different in recoil, but will shoot the same out of the barrel. so the action is the same, but the reaction is different. the 5lb rifle may not knock you down, but the 15lb rifle definetly will not.
Not so! It will make a difference in "felt recoil" but the recoil, or "reaction," exerted backwards is going to be the same! The The bullet, and the powder charge are going to determine that, not the weight of the rifle!

The argument about strictly speaking ahigh-powered slug "knocking an animal off its feet" is really no more relevant than .... "how many angels can balance on a head of a pin."
What counts is how much force, bullet expansion and controlled damage can be delivered to make the deer, elk, bear, whatever loose blood and consciousness as quickly as possible to bring it to the ground and expire.
That's the bottom line.
The shock to a deer’s system delivered by a high-power rifle in key places can an often time will bring it immediately to the ground. The rest is a nice academic exercise.
But if you enjoy that, it's okay, too.

I agree. I think people actually use it as more of "stopping-power" when they say it, not in the literal scence of cource, cause no round that I know of is going to knock a deer off it's feet...

On one hand, those are both serious cartridges for whacking power. On the other hand, deer aren't for much in the toughness department and kill easy.
Fine cartridges for deer though and certainly work well for elk as well.
My kinda guy.

This thread has made me realize how dumb I really am! I had no idea that there was that much to shooting an rifle. I thought if you shot a .243 and up into a deer's chest and forward that it will kill it. I feel so stupid !!!

i think deer are tough tho.

when bowhunting shot placement due too trajectory(when in stand or angled shots) is key.

Bad hit = NO Deer
