No whats amusing is people dont hunt anymore. I hunt whitetail with a stick and string and if I get lazy I bring out my .22 Hornet.

So how about telling us just how many elk that you have personally killed?

Ive killed a grand total of 0 to date. But I would still know better than to go with a 243.

My advice would be the less expierence you have and the farther you live from the woods the bigger the gun you need.

I consider a 243 marginal on deer to the average shooter. So I would guess that it wouldnt be adequate on a bigger, thicker animal like an elk. I havent shot one, but Im a good guesser sometimes.

I was actually asking the other individual for the second time, but again he declines to answer.Unless he decides to answer,we can only assume that he has never killed an elk.

I was wondering if anyone in here has taken elk with a 243 before. If you have what was your expeience? Like what bullet did you use? How far did the elk run after the shot? What was your shot placement? How far away was the elk? I am thinking about going on my first elk hunt nextfall in colorado on a late season cow elk hunt. I deer hunt with a savage model 12 243 with a 26" barrel and accu trigger. It is the only high powered rifle I have. I know there are better rounds to elk hunt with, but I don't have anything else to use right now so I'm looking for information on the 243 on elk. Please don't post about other rounds, cause thats not what I am looking for.
24 caliber is the minimum legal size fer colorado elk
if you feel confident with it; use it
i have harvested elk with 30cal and 277cal but not 243
elk are every bit as big and tuff as the posters on this thread have stated
this is a fact that ive witnessed first-hand
but they are not bullet proof
please report your results

good-luck

Yea, I figured you were asking the other guy. I just figured a throw a couple more pennies in for the heck of it.

This has gone about like I expected it to. Some say its ok, and some don't think it is a good idea. When it comes to chooseing a calbier to hunt with, bigger is not always better. You can shoot a big caliber, make a bad shot and would still either wound or loose game. Being accurate enough to make good shots is what matters. It is also important to have enough gun to do the task at hand. I'm not convinced the 243 is enough for clean ethical kills on elk.If I do get to go next year, which I hope I do! I will not be takeing my 243 along.

We dont have elk in Texas but I have seen some on a game ranch up close and personal, theyre not as big or tough as some of you claim.I'll bet money I could punch my .243 right clean through one every time, I bet the hogs I shoot are far tougher too penetrate than a thin skinned elk. I would do it in a heartbeat without even thinking about it and have no problems taking one cleanlywith a .243
A broadside shot through the boiler room and it's lights out. I saw some little girl on TV shoot some exotic cow looking thing (2000 lbs) with a .243 and she dropped it in its tracks with one shot to the boiler room.
ZREX you are probably right. When you see animals at petting zoos they are pretty weak, BUT take an animal that is truely wild and relies on survival of the fittest and that 243 will be undermatched. You wouldn't bring a knife (or a pick) to a gunfight would you????? Well after reading your posts, maybe you would.
