The biggest factor in this decison will be recoil and if there is a big differnce in the two

Chevy...I have a couple of thoughts...1) What type big game will you be hunting??? 2) What distance do you expect to be shooting???

If it is primarily deer within 300 yards...308
But....You could also add 25-06 (which I don't care for simply because of the length of barrel and around here lack of diversity of factory loadings)
Two other excellent choices would be 7mm-08 and .270....The 7mm-08 has gotten very popular around here because it kicks less than a .270/30-06....
And kills deer just as dead.

If you will be hunting game larger and tougher than deer...30-06 would be hard to beat.

Not much difference between the two in terms of ballistics and felt recoil, if using the same bullet weights, i.e. 150 gr .308 v. 150 gr .30-06.

Advantages for the .30-06: factory loads from 55 gr. to 220 gr. You're hard pressed around here to find anything other than 150's, 180's and maybe a few premium load 165's for the .308.

Advantages of the .308: shorter round means it's available in lighter, smaller, handier short action rifles like the Remington Model 7.

I was thinking .308 the entire time until you said that you'd be selling the 300 WSM. I would choose the .30-06 because it would offer you a greater variety of game to hunt with it. The .308 is great though.

I would also agree with what has already been said, they kick about the same.

.308 – If anyone can notice the difference in performance between the two while hunting please let me know. Not sure if Tikka makes a true short action receiver but if they do you will have a slightly lighter rifle with a little shorter bolt stroke, advantages in a hunting rifle.

The .308 "should" have a very slight accuracy edge. The 30-06 will offer more power. I love the .308, but would go with the 30-06 in the T3. Since it's only offered in a long action, there's no real advantage to have a short cartridge.

Why? Not trying to start anything... just curious.

I agree if this is the case.Even an avid hunter and occasional shooter would never notice a difference between the two, and if not reloading you will find a greater selection of factory hunting ammo for the good old '06.
