Default Turkey choke question

Not real experienced here in turkey hunting, but I currently own an 870 that I purchased with a "super full" turkey choke in it. This week I bought an 11-87 that came with an "extra full" choke in it. My question is what is the diameter difference and how much difference will I see with either. Which should I actually use????

The difference all depends on the maker of the tubes, but in general the difference will be about a hundreth of an inch ie. .665 or .655. Always try them both and see what looks best with several different loads.

both may be turkey pounders....or neither of them may be suitable.....when it comes to shotgunning patterning is the key to success....pattern the guns...the chokes just might be interchangeable...if so swap them gun to gun....try diffrent turkey loads in each combination.....start by getting regular loads hitting your point of aim...do this at 20-30yds....get it shooting where your aiming.....then get turkey targets with the brain and spine visible....start at 20yds with your turkey loads...most guys want atleast 4-8 hits in the brain and spine only to call it a usable turkey load...move out in 5yd increments till your pattern opens up and your no longer putting atleast 4-8 hits in the brain and spine...youll want to try diffrent shot sizes..shell legnths....brands...models etc.....it can get pricey....but right now...right after turkey season alot of places mark down turkey loads when they have alot left.....my stores never got anything in so i wont be shooting much! glad i got a good pattern.....one thing i find more important then pellet count is pattern density......i used to get 4-8 brain and spine hits...but that dont mean much when theres 300pellets in a shell and 250 dont even hit the 10x10 turkey target....switched chokes and was putting close to 200pellets in a nice uniform pattern at long ranges....a nice even dense pattern is nice.....it puts ALOT of hits in the basic head and neck of a turkey...and many brain and spine hits...as well as more damage to the turkey by artery hits...shock from the pellets etc.....it sounds like a chore but its not....you can buy 1 load and it may work terrific in both guns and chokes...then again it may not.....alot of guys find that 3 inch shells pattern better then 3 1/2 inch shells...but thats not ALWAYS true....one way to help split shell cost is get a few other turkey hunters you know......you all buy a box or 2 of turkey loads about the same price....diffrent shot size...brand...etc..then all switch a few shells and share....so youll buy a box or 2 of loads...but youll get to pattern a bunch of loads for the price of a box or 2....then you can buy what shot best and pattern in more indepth to find your max range etc......good luck

Gosh, I found this on the remington website once. If they are remington chokes, the superfull will be little tighter. I might or might not pattern better than the superfull. Only way to find out is to pattern. We ought do that sometime. I got some new ammo I would like to try out.

I have a 1300 winchester and many, many chokes. You can buy full to superfull and beyond and spend 7.99 to over a 100.00 for them. All chokes arent made the same and they can be made with grooves, ports, circles cut in them, come in different lengths and sizes. Although the choke can make the difference, alot of it all depends on ammunition, shot type(material made from), size, even length of shell(shooting 3" in 3 1/2 " or 2 3/4 in 3"), etc. My friends 3 1/2" Rem. pump shoots 3" shells actually tighter with less shot than a 3 1/2 shell with more shot. Go figure. Anything and everything can have an effect on the pattern. Its a game of trail and error. You can only read about what others have tried and go from there. I have costly chokes and cheaper ones. The best one that general shoots all loads well for me turned out to be a Northwind brand choke I bought at Wal-marts on sale for $3.00. They had them on closeout, but they are an excellent choke. Couldnt ever find out who made them but I bought two and one will slightly outshoot the other and they are the same brand and type with the same constriction. My friend bought some for his Remingtons and they outshoot all his other chokes also. I have patterned many types of ammuniton and chokes and like I said it is just trial and error. I will recommend hevi-shot though. I as well as my friend and brother shoot it and it reaches out, patterns tight and kills fast. It will be more costly, but im a believer in it after comparing it to alot of different lead loads out there. I like the original Hevi-shot loadings and they use the Remington brand. I think Remington lost the license though if im correct. I didnt see it on the site or in the new 2006 catalogue. Just do your research first on shell types and try both of the chikes with your ammunition at the range. I generally test mine at 40 yards. Im sure you will see a diiference and be able to pick out the best for your gun.
