Default 308 vs 243 for hunting and target

Looking for some feedback. I have two Tikka t3 rifles. one in 308, and the other in 243. Planning to make one a hunting rifle, and the other long range target rifle. What one would you use for what purpose. I will hunt mainly PA deer with the hunting rifle.Any suggestion will be considered...

I guess what are you going to do to make it a target rifle? Just put a heavy scope on?

Myself, I would definatly use my 308 on deer over a 243.

How long is long? If we are talking 1,000 meters the 308, If we're talking more like 400-600m I'd make the .243 the target gun and use the 308 for deer.

For deer hunting in PA either would suffice. Of course, in the .243 it is best to use premium bullets, but not absolutely necessary to do so. For black bear, some of which get pretty big in PA, I would prefer a .308 with 180-grain bullets. BUT,I did see several large grizzly-type bears in Alaska that had been killed with a .243, so it can be done!

sorry guys, I should have been more clear. The range I belong to has long range competition for standard hunting rifles only. The targets are a maximum of 500 yds. and as close as 100 yds. The rifle can not be altered, or can it have a heavy barrel. I can use any scope I desire. I guess my question is what t3 would be better for this type of shooting, the 308, or 243. The one I use for long range target, I will put a 4x16 power mil-dot scope.

I hate to say it this way, but the best one would probably be the most accurate one. Don't matter which. If it was steel targets, maybe the 308.

I think I would use the .308. You can get some great bullets for the 30 cal to shoot competition with.Wind drift would be less of a factor at the 300 to 500 yard ranges. It still wouldnt be impossible to take hunting tho.I didnt understand what you ment about the barrel. Can you have a heavy barrel or not ?

If your "long range" competition is limited to 500 yards, either caliber will suffice. The .308 with a 168-grain match bullet will have less wind drift, so requires less wind doping at 500 yards than the .243. On a calm day, either one will work pretty much the same. Since the .243 has less recoil, a lot of people can shoot better with that round!
