thousands and thousands of deer have been killed with .22s. From centerfires to rimfires they can all kill deer. How fast they do it and how reliably they do it is another matter but as for the killing partthere is no question they can and do.

I would never try it but I was reading on another forum were some one shot a deer with a 22 long rifle behind the shoulders and it only went 40 yards and died. now if your talking 223, 22-250, 220swift they will kill deer fine at reasonable ranges but I would stray away from hunting with them in my state you cant use 22 calibers for deer

This subject gets alot of opinons and is about beat to death

Read the latest issue of Shooting times. Has a whole article on using the .22-250 effectively for deer.

Eventually a shot to the chest or gut will kill but it is hardly humane.
I have a mate who shoots scrub bulls weighing around 800-1000kg with a 22/250rem but I wouldn’t recommend the practice. With a 22 cal shot placement has to be spot on for a clean kill and you have to be very careful about what projectiles you use as most are very fragile and have little to no penetration, and the only reliable shot is a head shot and due to the explosive nature of most .224 pills that can damage a good trophy.
But saying that I have culled some big Red Deer with a 223rem but all shots were placed in the throat and destroying the major arteries and death was very quick but most did run some distance.

If you read the 2005 Game Violation summary for the Colorado Division of Wildlife, you will find a deer that was illegally killed with a .22 pellet gun...

Also, don't miss the fellow that shot a bull elk, in the presence of a DOW officer, and claimed it was a bull moose. The office gutted the animal with the offender, and when transporting the carcass back to the offender's truck, found another elk carcass in the bed, the shooter claimed it was an antelope...
