I'm with aunsaber on this one. 45-70 as it will drop anything on the continent HARD within 150 to 200 yards.
The .308 because it is a very versatile round that would enable me to reach out a little further than the 45-70.

Otis-The cartridges I mentioned are high velocity rounds but they have no belts and were never called magnums by their originator. Therefore it comes down to each persons definition of a magnum.Would you call a 220 swift or 6mmx284 a magnum? Both are extremely high velocity rounds but are derived from beltless cases that have never been called a magnum. The 404 jeffery was never called a magnum but yet many of it's offspring such as the ultramags are called magnums.By my definition if it has no belt and there is no magnum in the official designation it is not a magnum.

30-06 pushing a 165 gr bullet, best all around big gamer I can think of, and for #2 I like the 6.5x55 Swede. Seeing as how this really isn't cheating on the question, I would like Hornady light magnum ammo.

For N.A. HOOFED GAME.
1. A REM. 7600 pump in .35 whelen (or 30/06) with a 2 to 7 power scope for everything in the bush.
2. A good bolt-action (Rem, Win. Ruger etc.) it .280 (or 30/06) with a 3 to 9 power and a bipod, for the longer shots in open country.
Moose in the muskeg or pronghorn on the prairie, I'd have the right medicine.
