I've never owned a Mossberg but have shot my Uncles a few times, and after doing so, had no reason to ever buy anything other than a 870.

I have an 835 for turkeys and an 870 for everything else. A good all-'round gun, I would take the 870. I would look at an 835 if you want a Mossberg with some use for turkeys. My 835 is devastating. My 870 is a nice light gun good for wing shooting. The 835 ulti-mag is a little heavier but don't regret it for turkeys.

I am not going to prefer one over the other because I don't know your whole situation, but I think you can make the right choice off of the feedback.

I had a mossberg 835 that was a great turkey gun but my 870 express is my go to all around shotgun. I use it for ducks, geese, dove, deer, hog, etc...

I have an 870 and a 500, but the 870 has been my main shotgun for 25 of my 35 years. I cant imagine a gun being anymore durable or dependable. The 500 is a good gun as well but I love my 870. The 870 always patterned like a rifle with the 30 in full choke and 6 shot.

I'm with Coyotestalker on this one, Mossberg 835 ultra mag shooting winchester 3" #5 turkey loads & the price & reliability, cant go wrong !!! Took turkeys at 40 + yards Drops them fast, crows as far as 60 yards....

ran into this big shot once Before turkey season, bragging about his Benelli( its a sweet gun ) but with a sweet price, He's saying dang I havent seen nothing Yet & what i have seen , I have missed lol I walked over to him ( I'am a 2nd year turkey hunter at the time ) & said I'm shooting a $275.00 Mossberg 835 Ultra Mag & this gun Doesn't miss .... & walked away lol The look on his face was pricless ........

The 835 Ulti-Mag is ELITE!!!! The original 3.5" shotgun, the best 3.5" shotgun out there. That flips 3'x3' boxes flying into the air at 40 yds. That's pretty damn amazing if you ask me. My shoulder doesn't agree too well though. Something I will have to get used to. I would rather suck up the pain for this gun, that be a wuss and get a gun no where near this good.

I haven't used it wing shooting for birds. Long days walkingin the woods require a nice light gun, something a 3.5" doesn't really fit. If I hunted ducks, I bet this would be just as elite as it is with turkeys.

I've owned both, but currently own 2 500's(12&20) and an 835. I've never once had a malfunction with any mossberg, and killed rabbits, deer, coyotes, turkeys, ducks, and geese and not looked back.

To me the 870 is just a name.

870 for sure!!! I have an 870 and my dad has an 835. When I run out of tags or just can't hunt, guess whos gun he wants to use. He loves my 870 and prefers using it over his brand new 835.

I'm an Ithaca 37 man myself, you know the love affair thing. But their are two mossburgs in my extended family and they are equally loved by their owners, and yes there is that price thing, which I allways thought leaned toward the mossburg. But just before Christmas I was in Acadamy Sports in Birmingham Al. and they had an 870 for about 200 bucks looks like you need go buy you a gun and be happy!
