RE: Mossberg 500 vs. Remington 870
I have both in my gun cabinet. I grab the 870 as the go to gun. I carry the 500 in my truck for a backup. I have not pulled the 500 out in 5 years.
Go with the 870!!!!!!!!

Don't overlook the Special Purpose Models. There are a few improvements for 2006 that can be seen at the Remington Firearm site.Dont let the suggested retail price scare you.Walmart can special order any of the 870s for you at a real good price.

Yes the remington is a good gun.but dont think the mossberg a inferior gun. They are liked by most of their owners .Just shot a deer tonight with my 500 slug.80YDS.Very accurate.I also have 2 Beretta's,1 rem.

RE: Mossberg 500 vs. Remington 870
I've had a Mossberg 500 for thirty years. Only once did I have a jam, and that was after I'd owned, fired and never cleaned anything except the barrel for a number of years. I was of course hunting ducks when it jammed... served me right.[:@]
If I had it to do all over again I don't know if I would get the 870 instead or not. The 870 is a nicer looking gun, and the slide doesn't twist and rattle so much as my Mossberg does. The 870 is hands down a GREAT shotgun. However, the Mossberg's saftey is on the tang, right where I like it. The 870's safety is behind the trigger, a setup which has never felt natural to me.
You would not go far wrong with either gun. SHoulder them both, see which one fits the best, and give some thought as to where you like the safety.
Good luck!

Still own 2 of the 3 Mossberg 500's & 1 of 2 870's.
Bought the special purpose 870 slugger in 04.Nice gun, does not shoot slugs as well as the 500.Not impressed at all with the way its built compared to the 870 I had 30 yrs ago! Its still a nice gun.
Mossbergs ain't pretty - matter of fact Ugly, action is bit noisy BUT its a real workhorse/shooter for the money.
I also like double extractors in the 500's(single in 870's).
