If you want to use a conventional bullet go with a 180gr.If you want to use a 165gr go with a premium bullet such as the partition, failsafe or barnes x.

The 300 Wby. with a 165gr. bullet is plenty powerful for elk. I also believe in premium bullets like the Barnes X and Nosler Partitions etc., but that 165gr. bullet in 300 Wby. will do the trick as long as your shot placement is proper. No matter how powerful your cartridge of choice is, nothing makes up for a misplaced shot.

That would be an excellent choice for elk. I don,t think you could do better. I am a big fan of the X bullet. The 180 or 200 either one should work fine. Most any good bullet should suffice as the 300 Weatherby may is more that enough gun. One of my friends won,t use anything but the 340 Weatherby but he love pain.

The .300 Wby. is a great elk caliber. If you are intent on using an 165 grain bullet go with the nosler partition. The 180 grain partition would also be an excellent choice.

I would be concerned with bullet blowup with a 165 grain btsp...It has happened to me twice with a 7 rem mag and 162 btsp(Hornady) bullet disintegrating when striking hide/muscle . The jacket literally shredded on the hide and the target was over 200 yards away when shot. Get a premium bullet in a 300 wthby when shooting deer or larger.

good cartridge but a little bit of recoil too. if you have the gun by all means use but if you are buying a gun, you may want to look into something with less power, a .308, 30-06, .35 whelen, .300win mag., 300WSM. something in that range
