What part of the head did you hit the deer in? If you hit the jaw, with ANY cartridge, it could very easily get back up. In order to kill a deer immediately, you need to hit the spine or brain, obviously you hit niether on that shot. As far as a deer running more than 50 yards, thats not that bad. Heck, even 100 yards isn't too bad. How much time does it take a deer to cover 50 yards? Not very long. If there is still air in their vessels, they can cover some ground in a short amount of time. If you hit the deer in the lungs, heart, or liver, the deer is dead. My first deer was hit with the .30-06 and 165 Winchester Power Points. I hit the heart, and that little 150 lb doe STILL covered 300 yards with no heart!! She still had plenty of air in her blood to get her that far, thats all. Now is the .30-06 a bad cartridge because of that? No. I have killed 3 more with the .30-06 and 165 grain soft point bullets. It works. Put the bullet in the boiler room and you have a dead deer, the difference between the Big 7 and the .30-06 isn't enough for the deer to notice!!

awww man, you are taking the fun out of it for me. When we go crop damage hunting in the summer, we take the 7's and set up on the edge of bean fields kinda "sniper style" with bipods and range finders and pluck them off as they are eating between the eyes. Of course all of the head shots are under 200 yards using guns that are reloaded and shoot under 1" and the bipod helps too. Its kinda fun to ride around the field after an evening of hunting collecting the deer that never took a step after being shot. Warning, shooting deer between the eyes with 140 Nosler BT's is not for the faint of heart......some weak stomached people might lose their cookies

welcome bigbuck13754,not sure what happened with you, but i have killed more deer with a 7 mag than CWD has, it ain't the gun or the caliber, not taking anything away from the -06, because i ownseveral of both and they are both effectivenext question

There is nothing wrong with a 7mmMag.Apparently you had bad shot placement.If you hit them right they will go down.I blew the heart and lungs out of a 7 point a few years back.The brush was covered in frothy blood and lungs. He still managed to run a good 75 yards before dropping.Then there has been others that drop in their tracks.Take your time and make sure of your shot placement.It's easy to blame the gun and cartridge when in reality it's human error.

a poorly hit deer with a 7 Mag won't die any faster than if it were hit with a 25-06. A well hit deer with the 25-06 will die as quick as a well hit deer with the 7Mag.. Shot placement is the only thing that matters with calibers with sufficient power.

Shot 11 whitetails with7 mag hornady 139 gr BTSP. Not a one took a step. Shot 2 with winchester silvertip. Both of these ran 50+ yards. Take a close look at the type of bullet you shoot. The 284 caliberis one of the best calibersfor whitetail and many other big game species.

The 7mm Remington magnum is a great deer cartridge. As far as the core-lokts being garbage? I think that core-lokt bullets have probably taken more deer over the years than any other bullet. I could be wrong, but I know a TON of guys that shoot them.

I would bet that you are right about the Corlokts.

I have used 150gr Core Lokts out of my 300 winny, at whitetail deer, and they made a mess of the lungs and heart!!!! I really dont think you need a premium bullet for deer, like you do for elk and larger game. A good soft tip bullet will do just fine. I have shot deer that have run for 25 yds, and when we open them up, there is no heart or lungs!!! I dont think a 50 cal would have stoopped dear when they rn like that, and dont know their dead!!!!

A bunch of guys I know use their pocket knives as screwdrivers too, but it doesn't mean it is the best tool for the job and often times ends up making a mess out of a simple project. The CoreLokt is probably fine out of something without all the velocity, but in my experience they just don't hold up when pushed. CoreLokts are like 30-30's, people shoot them because they are cheap.
