35whelen info
#2
Welcome to the board archer-o. The 35 Whelen is a hard hitting cartridge. There are some of them floating around.Remington made some along with Ruger making a "Limited Edition"M-77.I'm sure there were others made I'm not familiar with.If you're looking for one watch www.gunsamerica.com . I found a NIB Ruger M-77 35 Whelen at a reasonable price. If you handload you can load 158 grain up to 250 grain bullets. The Speer manual shows these bullets. If you don't reload I would steer away from the Whelen. Ammunition is not carried at many stores and can be costly when you do find it. Another option is ordering ammuntion through shooter supply houses which makes it a little more cost efficient.Yes they are nice guns and a excellent cartridge but you'll pay the price..Recoil and Monetary. i have one and i do not reload.
ammo runs anywhere from the 200gr. to 250gr. remington PSP's $24.95 and the 225gr. federal trophy bonded bear claws are $30.95.
if your local guns store dose not have then they ca always order it for you.

Quilly I didn't say you have to reload to own one. What was meant was the ammunition is costly but can be reloaded for a big savings. Why have a store order it for you when you can order ammunition yourself. Then again in MA maybe you can't order your ammunition like the free world can. Ruger Redhawk

There is a regional ammo manufacturer near me that produces good factory ammo, if there is not the type bullet you are looking for then email them and they will qoute you a price. You can choose from sending in your own brass (cheapest), choosing once fired brass (cheaper), or new brass about the same as regular ammo for the most part. I choose to go this route to get more bullet choices for my whelen.
you can find them at www.alabamaammo.com

If your father in law likes the 35 Whelen, he can't be all bad... that's a good choice. I reload for my rebarrelled mauser, but I shot a box of factory Remington stuff which grouped ok... and I have just bought a box of Federal Premiums with the 225 Trophy Bonded bullet. I think I paid about 26 dollars for it thru Midway... can't wait to see how they shoot. If they group well, I just might use them on my upcoming cow elk hunt in Colorado... will be the first time I've used factory ammo when hunting...... oh, except for the pig I shot with my SKS and Federal Premium ammo...I didn't reload for it then...
