Need some help. I have been visiting many gun dealers in the search for the ultimate 30-06 bolt deer rifle. I will be hunting in Nebraska and Wisconsin this year with shots under 300 yds. I like the SAVAGE 116FXP3 Package with 3x9x40 scope. I cannot find any reviews on this rifle online. Any recommendations? Or would you go with the Remington model 700 30-06SPS or SPS DM w/leupold scope. I want to stay under $600. If go with the leupold scope, what would you recommend? Thank you.

I have the 116 FSS rifle which appears to be identical. I purchased the rifle outright and bought a Burris 3 x 9 x 40 Fullfield 2 scope for under $600.00. In factI got a special Burris was running with a spotting scope also included. My gun has the accutrigger and shoot 1" groups.

Any Savage will bea solid dependable no frills rifle. Their accuracty is on par with any other manufacturer and they do turn out some astonishingly accurate rifles. I would opt for some other scope than the one that comes on the package rifle. Scopes I would look to are the Nikon Buckmaster, Bushnell Elite 3200, or Burris Fullfield II.

I've owned the SAVAGE 16FXP3 Package with 3x9x40 scope in .300 WSM for three deer seasons. My only complaint is the poor recoil pad which comes with the rifle. I replaced the pad, but in so doing changed the length of pull. Gunsmith said he couldn't custom fit a pad to keep length of pull the same because the way the synthetic stock is made. The scope is okay, someday I'll replace it though as the eye relief doesn't suit me well. Have shot deer at 75 and 180 yards with it. All in all a good gun.
