hey guys i just purchased my first rifle its a remington 700 adl in .270 its the 1994 model adl so it looks better than the new ones. Anyways i was wondering what the recoil is like is it like a 30-06 or just a bit more than a .243?? Also how far can a .270 shoot and be effective i was thinking about using it for pronghorn too?? thanx

270 works great for antalopes .Sounds like u have a nice riflether bf55.
Efective range im not sure guess it depends what your hunting , the bullets etc- but pretty far. off hand not sure distances.
Same with the kick gun& bullet weights effect all that . But 270.case is a 30/06 necked down same powder charges etc. But heavyer 30 bullets kick more then the 270. 150 grainers .

I have a 700 ADL in 270. Accurate rifle and I like it very much. I'll get blased for this but I found the recoil to be harsh. I think it is the stock design and the way it fit me. Left bruises. No other 270 felt that bad and I've owned a few.

I put a decelerator recoil pad on it and now she's a ***** cat.

Wife has a Browning Abolt .270 Win and it's a great gun. You should be able to shoot deer and antelope out to 400 yards, further than most people should be shooting. Load it up with a premium bullet and you should have no problem on any Elk within 300+ yards.

I like the Nosler Balistic tips and Partitions in 140 grain for handloads. Both shoot well in her gun and recoil is less than 30-06. Like 1eyefish said, it's a 30-06 case necked down to shoot a .270 bullet so with a similar powder charge it should push the lighter bullet faster and flatter than the '06 with less recoil for a similar weighted/designed rifle.

The recoil on the 270 Winchester should be alot less than the 30-06. I have a Winchester Model 70 with the Boss Muzzlebrake and after 30 rounds my shoulders would still be OK. It also shoots flatter than the 30-06.

I have 2/ 270. rifles , but only one 30-06.. at this time. But all things being equal the 30-06 as the parent to the 270. dont see how one could kick a LOT less Or MORE then the other. If both had 100 grain bullets or 150 grainers etc.it be the same wouldnt it? I guess most 30-06 ammo used wouldbe 165-180 grains(i know they make 220,s too) i have a bunch of 30-06 with 150,s( military& civilian) But thats only a15- 30 grain difference , the size of a extalight weight 22.

In the recoil equation the weight of the powder charge carries more &quot;weight' then the weight of the bullet. In theory a 30-06 and a 270,both shooting 150's with the same powder charge &quot;should&quot; recoil the same,but the 30-06 will tolerate more of the same powder with a 150,therefore greater recoil. That's why when people say you can shoot lighter bullets to reduce recoil,I don't buy it. If you load both to the same pressure the lighter bullet loads will recoil the same or even more than the heavier bullet loads,as it will take more powder to get the lighter bullet loads to the same pressure.I've owned a few of each,270 and 30-06.If you are going to have one rifle for all North American hunting,get the 30-06.If you have a heavier cartridge for larger game,like a 300 Win,300 Wtby, 338 etc., and you want a flat shooting deer rifle,by all means get a 270.But I certainly wouldn't use one as an &quot;all 'rounder&quot;.
