RE: Question on the 270 winchester
Wife has a Browning Abolt .270 Win and it's a great gun. You should be able to shoot deer and antelope out to 400 yards, further than most people should be shooting. Load it up with a premium bullet and you should have no problem on any Elk within 300+ yards.
I like the Nosler Balistic tips and Partitions in 140 grain for handloads. Both shoot well in her gun and recoil is less than 30-06. Like 1eyefish said, it's a 30-06 case necked down to shoot a .270 bullet so with a similar powder charge it should push the lighter bullet faster and flatter than the '06 with less recoil for a similar weighted/designed rifle.
