Steyr Mtn. Rifle 25-06
I am thinking about buying a 25-06 cal. Steyr Mtn. rifle with a 20'' S.S. barrel at $599. I am convinced the 25-06 cal. will complement my other rifles and be great for all deer sized game andlarger varmints. So I'm set on cal. choice.
My questions: 1) does anyone have experience with Steyr rifles, and in particular, with the Mtn. rifle? 2) A 20'' barrel will be sufficient? 3) Is $599 a good deal for this rifle?
(My Steyr M40 pistol hassuperb fit, finish, and engineering. It has performed flawlessly through 1,200+ rounds--so I'm pretty sure Steyr firearms are generally good. You can find M40/M9's on the Web for $300-400!!!!)

I have no experience with Steyr rifles but I do with the 25.06.
Yes the 25.06 is an excellent round for deer sized game & varmits.
As for the 20" barrel I suspect you would be happier with a longer barrel in the 24 to 26" range. The shorter barrel will not let the powder to fully burn. If you want the shorter barrel I suggest the 25 Roberts if avalible. Out of a 20" barrel there will not be much difference between the 2 calibers & the 25 Roberts will use less powder more efficeintly.
Best Wishes

The Steyr's i've been around, were very nice rifles! A personal friend of mine used one all over Alaska in 30-06 cal. flattening everything he hunted.
He had always used Rem. 220RN, "untill" i loaded him some 200NP's, hesure got hooked on them for everything he hunted with that rifle from then on!!!

Thanks for the info guys!
CDNN Sports has Mtn. rifles for $599. I just found out searching the web that Wally-World now also carries the Mtn. rifles ($879-780) in a bunch of other calibers and they even carry Steyr Mannlicher’s (.243/.308/30-06).
