7 mag or 35 whelen
Going on my first moose hunt this fall. Need to choose between my 7 mag (using 160 gr. core lock ultras) or my 35 Whelen (225 grain trophy bonded bear claw). What do you think?

RE: 7 mag or 35 whelen
Old fashioned here... Moose are good sized critters so I would go with a the fat bullet, the 35 Whelen, myself.

RE: 7 mag or 35 whelen
Both setups will do the job nicely on bullwinkle..Moose aren't all that hard to kill..It just sometimes TAKES them awhile to realize that they are dead...
At normal ranges, 300 yards or less, I'd go with the Whelen to take advantage of the heavier bullet... The TTBC will smash through heavy bone and muscle better if you have to take a shot at a less than ideal angle... If you anticipate a LONG shot ( 300 plus) the 7 mag might be a better choice, but you'd want to wait for a good broadside shot at the ribcage...Put the bullet into the lungs with either round and you'll have lots of moose meat to deal with in short order... |

i would go with the 7mm

RE: 7 mag or 35 whelen
I have hunted moose most of my hunting career. I used a .338 mag for many years and now when hunting moose bring a 7mm rem mag and a .350 rem mag which is darn near the same as the Whelen. It all depends on the cover what rifle I carry that morning. Last fall I was hunting a large clear cut at sun up so the 7mm was what I carried in case of a longer shot but it dropped the bull in his tracks at around 125 yds. My point, bring both ( you need a backup anyway) and you are setup perfectly.

The Whelen would be my choice.

RE: 7 mag or 35 whelen
Either one will do the job, though I'd prefer the 35Whelen myself.
