7 mag or 35 whelen
Going on my first moose hunt this fall. Need to choose between my 7 mag (using 160 gr. core lock ultras) or my 35 Whelen (225 grain trophy bonded bear claw). What do you think?

RE: 7 mag or 35 whelen
Old fashioned here... Moose are good sized critters so I would go with a the fat bullet, the 35 Whelen, myself.

RE: 7 mag or 35 whelen
Both setups will do the job nicely on bullwinkle..Moose aren't all that hard to kill..It just sometimes TAKES them awhile to realize that they are dead...
At normal ranges, 300 yards or less, I'd go with the Whelen to take advantage of the heavier bullet... The TTBC will smash through heavy bone and muscle better if you have to take a shot at a less than ideal angle... If you anticipate a LONG shot ( 300 plus) the 7 mag might be a better choice, but you'd want to wait for a good broadside shot at the ribcage...Put the bullet into the lungs with either round and you'll have lots of moose meat to deal with in short order... |
RE: 7 mag or 35 whelen
i would go with the 7mm

RE: 7 mag or 35 whelen
I have hunted moose most of my hunting career. I used a .338 mag for many years and now when hunting moose bring a 7mm rem mag and a .350 rem mag which is darn near the same as the Whelen. It all depends on the cover what rifle I carry that morning. Last fall I was hunting a large clear cut at sun up so the 7mm was what I carried in case of a longer shot but it dropped the bull in his tracks at around 125 yds. My point, bring both ( you need a backup anyway) and you are setup perfectly.

RE: 7 mag or 35 whelen
The Whelen would be my choice.
|
RE: 7 mag or 35 whelen
Either one will do the job, though I'd prefer the 35Whelen myself.

RE: 7 mag or 35 whelen
I,ll follow suit with most others, and go with the old goody the 35 Whelen. vangunsmith

whelen

RE: 7 mag or 35 whelen
7 Mag.

RE: 7 mag or 35 whelen
I'd choose the 35 Whelen but that's only because it's different and I don't have one yet myself.
The dead moose will never know the difference between the two. However, like TerryM said........ Bring both with you. I sure would hate to have one break and not have a back up. |
RE: 7 mag or 35 whelen
I would use the more accurate gun, but as everyone else said both will work.

RE: 7 mag or 35 whelen
I would pick the 7mag just because it can go the distance and i my self have already been charged by a moose and thank god for my dads decision to go behind a tree that was v shaped so we could put our gun in between the "v" tree (this animal seen us at 150yrds and started to charge) but what ever made it turn around a start to run the other way god only knows!!!! its a scary moment considering i was only 12yrs old!!!!!!! And i was hunting ek and deer and i really didn't want to shoot it if it came in my danger zone(50yrds or closer)and i knew my dad and i would drop it between a 30-30 and a 300wm but we where trying to avoid that sittuation as much as possible. But i would be pick the 7mag because i wouldn't want to get that close to a moose again and the bullet wouldn't drop that fast, and most of the moose i have seen have been at least 200 yrds away or more (beside the one that charged me) and i myself don't know much about a 35whelen just its ballistics (i really haven't paid much attention to the tragectory so i woldn't know) and the 7mag is kinda in the same area between there ballistics but the 7mag can reach the distance with out that much pick up on the gun(if u know what i mean!!!!!!) But that is my opinion and i thought you would want to hear that story and know that they will charge you even if u are a group of people with you< i would have to say i was very luck with this situation!!!!!!!!! But the deccsion is on you and what you are comfortible with...

RE: 7 mag or 35 whelen
Personally I'd opt for the Whelen, my load would be a 225 gr partition though, nothing wrong with the TBBC's just that they always fouled my barrels something terrible. Anyhow, I agree bring both if it was me I'd be bringing the 06 and the Whelen.

RE: 7 mag or 35 whelen
The Whelen. I want the heavy bullet.
|
RE: 7 mag or 35 whelen
My choice would be the 7mm Rem. Mag.
|
RE: 7 mag or 35 whelen
Same here.
|
RE: 7 mag or 35 whelen
If you're counting votes, put me in the Whelen camp.
My moose gun is a .35 Whelen, and I wouldn't own a 7mm RemMag. |
RE: 7 mag or 35 whelen
I've hunted and harvested moose with both the 7 Rem. mag., and the 350 Rem. mag.. Both would work, but the 7 mag. would be better for longer shots. The thing is, i'd want a better bullet in the 7 mag. like 160 grain NP's..

RE: 7 mag or 35 whelen
i would stik with the 35 at minimal ranges, plus it would be a excellent brush or close quarters shooter. topped with a good scope you cant go wrong. but then u talk of range, the range rifle hands down in this compariosn is the 7 mag . i have a 7mm and use to ahve a 35 both excellent guns currently im in love with mey savage 7mm rem mag.

RE: 7 mag or 35 whelen
Count my vote for the .35 Whelen....... any North American creature within 250 yards is capable of being taken with it.
|
RE: 7 mag or 35 whelen
I've never hunted Moose before. We don't see many down south.
If I did get the chance I would go with the Whelen. The Moosebeing such a big creature, I would go with the bigger heavier bullet the Whelen has.If I anticipated a long shot then I might consider the 7mm RM or a 300 Win Mag.. The Whelen is a fine cartridge and should serve your needs. Ruger Redhawk |
RE: 7 mag or 35 whelen
Thanks for the help.
|
RE: 7 mag or 35 whelen
I agree with Ruger!
|
RE: 7 mag or 35 whelen
7 Mag
|
RE: 7 mag or 35 whelen
My vote goes to the 35 Whelen.
|
RE: 7 mag or 35 whelen
Chopper, the last bull moose I killed in Alberta, I killed with
a 6.5mm Swede> Norma 156gr " Alaska" ammo. IMO a 30-06 0r 7mm Mag will do. |
