James what kind of bullets were you using on the deer that ran reall far ?
Ive been hunting for almost 30 years, the early days were with a 30-30 then went to a .243, I have used .270, 30-06, 308, 22-250, 222, all on deer and hogs. I have never lost a deer or hog to any of these calibers. I just cant put that .243 down. It kills like a bolt of lightning. I have only had one deer run farther than 40 yds,with my .243, it was a doe that went about 100 yds with a heart shot. Havent lost one, not a hog either, Ive killed 300+ lb hogs with it.
People I hunt with have all converted to the .243, that makes 5 people, another went up from a .243 went through a few calibers, he currently shoots a .300 mag. he told me last year he's getting rid of it to go back to his .243. I used his .300 on some hogs a year or so back and I wasnt impressed, didnt get pass through on two hogs at 70 yds, while my .243 blew clean through hogs of equall size at 250 yds. The gun has no kick, very quite, real pleasant to shoot, put the cross hairs where you want and the gun does the rest. ( better than the rest) yes it's that good.

Hey Zrex, checked your profile there; Mario Benavidez
So, who the heck is Darrell?
And, there you go again, advocating varmint bullets (85gr.HPBT) for deer hunting.
Oh, almost forgot your other note. Now you're telling us the 243Win. is an elk cartridge?
No offense, but I think your deck is a card or two short!
I'm done.

This coming from one who hunt rabbits with a high powered rifle. hahahaha ! This alone tells me a lot about your hunting skills, you have none!@

Didn't say you were. Just pointing out you may be exercising creative license in your writing. That or you were using piss poor bullets in the 300 Win Mag. Now which is it?

One thing we agree on. I stopped using them a long time ago because they won't hold together.

Lets look at the 243, 270, and 30-06

BC Velocity Energy
243/100gr .373 2960 1945

270/140gr .360 2925 2659

30-06/150 .331 2910 2820

This is the ballistics using Remington Premier Core-Lokt Ultra bullets.

Now, Lets look at figures that tell a better picture on bullet performance. Momentum value, and the Taylor Knock out value.

Momentum Value

MV= (bullet weight in grains/100) X (velocity/100)

Taylor Knock out value

TKO=(caliber X bullet weight X velocity) / 7000

So using those formulas, this is what you get

MV TKO
243 29.6 10.27
270 40.95 16.20
30-06 43.65 19.21

So, as you can see, the 243 is not the best choice for deer. Does it work, yes. Are their better choices, absolutely. Good luck

This same thing should be drawn up for the old 270 for elk. It is the same way. You can kill deer with 243 any day but it is not the best. Same with the 270 and elk

Oooooooh noooooooo !
the TKO and momentum theory's. hahahaha ! What a bunch of bunk !
You guys that shoot .300 mags should just throw them guns away and buy 45-70's because heres how those numbers stack up

.......................................momentum... ...........TKO
300 mag 180 gr bullet..........52.28...................22.8
45-70 405 gr.bullet..............53.8.....................34
.444 240 gr.........................56.4................... ..35.5
As you see here the .300 mag is inferior to these two other cartridges.
Buwahahahahaha ! Who believes this crap. Totall bunk !
