RE: 243 vs 460 wby mag

Elk, I have used a .243 for deer, but it is marginal. I went to a 6.5mm instead.
Anything will kill deer, but you want it to drop when shot. The 6.5mm has
terffic penetration and knock down power. Everyone uses what they want.
Who am I to tell anyone what to use? Just an Ethical thing that's all.

I think you guys should look in to the way a bulet expands. SPEED is the main facter. If you shot a deer with a 460 if you use soft nose and not some expanding bullet it would just mack a arrow sizzed hole in one side and out the outher. There is not enough deer there to make the bullet expand.

Now the 243 is fast and a little bulet. So it will expand way eazyer. The 243 would blister and field dress a deer faster than a 460.

Someones making sense.;)

Doesn't the bullet alone on a 460 weigh as much as a complete 243 cartridge?:D
LMAO! ;)

ok danny whitetails in wv average 110 pounds, the 243 is much better suited for that situation, I also live in wv and use to deer hunt some with a 350 rem. mag. It was the worst whitetail rifle I ever used, you never killed one right out, you always hadta track. Like elk said no expansion, Whitetails are considered light thin skinned game so soft points will do the best. I've taken more than my share with a 223 rem. right now my primary deer rifle is a 25 WSSM.

Another person making sense.;)

DannyD,
You must understand that last week we had a guy comparing his 243 to a 257 Bob and a 25-06 and everything in between. His argument was that velocity meant everything.

Comparing ?
I was showing you the .243 is better than these cartridges. Has the bob beat all the way around, makes almost identical numbers the 25-06 does with half the powder, half the recoil, half the blast, with short action to boot. more accurate too!

crazy right?
This forum has a lot of great posts and a tremendous amount of collective and individual experience.
From a new hunters prespective though (which i am), If I wanted a deer rifle to be used under 200 yards (which in WV almost all are taken) you could find an experienced hunter to make a case for either one of these cartridges and every one in between.
maybe thats a good thing. There is no one answer and there never will be.
As a new hunter it is great to have so many choices for a particular purpose and not be wrong.
if you only want shots under 200yrds look at a 308, 270,280,30-30,25-06,6mm. those are some calibers that are great for deer and beginner hunters, and great for your "comfort zone"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, that settles it. If I ever go to Africa after an elephant, I'm taking my daughters .243.

No Way, NO HOW does the 243 beat the 257 Robert, 25-06 or 250 Savage when it comes to killing deer. I have killed a bunch with all four of those calibers and I am here to tell you that the 243 does not outperform any of them shooting deer. It only stacks up on paper and in in BS! I have been there and done that for many years. So while I enjoy the debate and it does help to pass the off season, I have seen them all in action as well as many other calibers. So just know that the BS part falls on very deaf ears at my house.:D You will continue to use it until it fails and I will stay away from it except for varmits for which it is pretty well suited.

Ha ha haa!
OK you are right.
Bullet speed, energy, trajectory, wind resistance, accuraccy, muzzle blast and recoil have nothing to do with what makes a gun better. Just JamesB's opinion. Your right ,your so right...
buwahahahaha !

but that is also my opinion these r also some of the great calibers that are good for deer beyond 200 yards besides the 30-30, but ne other ones stated are good for deer beyond/under 200 yrds
