243 vs 460 wby mag
crazy right?
This forum has a lot of great posts and a tremendous amount of collective and individual experience. From a new hunters prespective though (which i am), If I wanted a deer rifle to be used under 200 yards (which in WV almost all are taken) you could find an experienced hunter to make a case for either one of these cartridges and every one in between. maybe thats a good thing. There is no one answer and there never will be. As a new hunter it is great to have so many choices for a particular purpose and not be wrong. |

Yep I agree with you, but you're gonna have someone tell you that you are wrong for picking any one particular caliber eventually.
Such as a .22 centerfire for deer or even a .243. Such as a .270 for those armor wearing elk. Or a 30-30 for Northern whitetail. AS long as you know "X" cartridge is fully capeable and you know your abilites then it won't matter what the others think. |
RE: 243 vs 460 wby mag
I have been here for quite a while but I don't recall the 460 ever being recommended for deer hunting. I seldom see the 460 recommended for anything. However I see your point.:D

Ok, Zrex, where are you? What say you, 243Win. vs. 460Wtby.Mag.? ;)
Deer rifle (deer only), and for shots at max. distance of 200yds., often less, for use in WV, the "perfect" rifle/cartridge is: 257Robts., 6.5x55, 270Win., 7x57, 7mm-08, 280Rem., 300Savage, 308Win., 30/30 or 45/70 in a Marlin. As for the others, any good bolt action with a barrel length of no more than 20" (Ruger Ultra-Light, Remington Mod. 7, Winchester 70carbine, or just cut your barrel back a couple inches). Voila = PERFECTION!!! ![]() |

I have to laugh when i think about how fast the deer I have seen shot with the lowly 30-30 in WV have went down. Went down like they were hit with a bolt of lightning at 55 and 75 yards.

Oh, come on. The 460 weatherby will not only take down a Whitetail it field dresses it for you. I wouldn't count on much besides hamburger or sausage though.;)

I've read a lot of the posts and understand why you asked Zrex about the 243. Sounds like you guys have had a difference of opinion on the 243. Like I said I am new and I only have a 30-30 and 270 but plan on building a decent collection over the next many years. I'm not sure the additionswill be by necessity though |

RE: 243 vs 460 wby mag
I think you guys should look in to the way a bulet expands. SPEED is the main facter. If you shot a deer with a 460 if you use soft nose and not some expanding bullet it would just mack a arrow sizzed hole in one side and out the outher. There is not enough deer there to make the bullet expand.
Now the 243 is fast and a little bulet. So it will expand way eazyer. The 243 would blister and field dress a deer faster than a 460. I think one of the worst things they make are the SUPPER expanding bullets |

Someone is taking this post seriously again? C'mon. 243 vs 460? It's a joke, get it?;)
