The only intelligent quote on this thread......what's the matter people...can't you read? These numbers are very very conservative on the 243 side. The 243 is among the finest deer cartridges ever made and the 30-30 is a good 100 yard brush gun. You want numbers? I'll give you numbers....OBTW, I own a 30-30 and use it for 2 stands on my farm. Neither are bear rifles....anyone hunting bear with a 243 or 30-30 better have someone standing behind them with a 338 win mag. This thread is so inane, I don't even know why I wasted my time. Regards, Rick. OBTW, a 150 gr round nose 30 cal. bullet fired at 2300'/sec has 948'lbs of energy at 150 yards....don't go there....oh by the way 2....at 300 yards, it has 489'lbs of energy...but it doesn't matter since it ran innto the ground at 250.

Heres another compairson using a better bullet for the .243 to the .30-30

.................................................. ..100yds........200yds.......300yds

.243,100gr Fed.BT..................fps...... 2760...........2570........2380
.30-30,150gr rem coreloct.......fps.......1973...........1605...... ..1303
.
....................................energy......
.243.............................................. .1690..........1460........1260
.30-30.............................................129 6...........858........565
drop....
.243.............................................. ..0".............-3.1"........11.4"
30-30..............................................0" ............ -7.6"........28.8

Theres realy no comparison the .243 is almost twice the gun. It's ridicuolous to choose the .30-30 over it. At the muzzle energy is about the same but tapers off very quickly for the 30-30
A 50yd shot, a bear wouldnt know the difference. a 200 yd shot on deer or bear, theres a huge difference. The .243 is superior. At 300 yds the .243 is better than the .30-30 is at a 100yds. No contest.

Well, I really thought there were smarter people on this board...it's like comparing a 100 megaton nuke with a 500 pound bomb...I'm done, stick a fork in me.

Wow are you ok man, what happen was dinner not ready for ya when you got home from work?? It appears your a little upset, to be insulting people with a comment like "I really thought there were smarter people on this board..." I think the good thing about this board is the mixed views of both these rounds. Does this make me stupid for my choice between the 243 and 30/30? I've seen what both are able to do and yes My choice for under 200yards is the 30/30 just my prefrence. I seen you jumpn up and down about the 243 at 300yards (not impressive at all -11.4 drop) which in that case if I'm in an area where a shot like that would be a good possibility the 243 would stay home and the 270 or the beloved 30-06 would be taken out. My wife uses the 243 and in few years when my daughter is old enough to hunt she will be using it too. Man this topic started off good now we have name callen Ballistic Charts being used as if it were a page out of the Bible and must be followed and understood or eternal damnation will befall you. Ballistic charts are good to use to put you on paper however they are only a fraction of what it takes to harvest game. I'm quite sure we all have that one buddy who reads balistics charts then thinks they found the perfect almighty round, then gets a brand new rifle, goes out during deer season and feels it can blast anything at any distance however he misses or wounds the animal and then blames the wepon or the round.

Bass77. Don't bother those dreamers with the truth. If it shows it on paper its Gospel to them just like you said. Its fun to be called a dumbo isn't it. The one guy says he is done. Thank god it was getting deep in here.

Yes and they tell the truth about what a bullet does and doesn't do at a certain range. Then other factors like bullet construction and kinetic energy. and.TKO are used to determine a cartridges viablility for a certain application My first highpower rifle was a 30/30 and I loved that gun it is a good short range cartridge. On a 243's worst shooting day it will shoot groups 1/2 the size or betterthen a 30/30.. Factor that out to 300 yards and tell me what is better. Forget the brush busting nonsense brush deflects a 45/70 only advantage I can see is the 30/30 can be carried in one hand and is handy for certain applications . Put a scope on it and it and the handiness is gone and it becomes a long range wannabe.

FWIW this has to be the most assinine post ever . I should have said the most assinine thread
