Most rivers and streams in upstate NY are a little thin on insect hatches in early April. The nymphs will not become active until later April and May as the water temps go up. Also the trout are a bit lethargic until the water temps get into the mid 40s. A third point is that the water is a bit fast and murky for effective nymphing. A tried and true approach is to use streamer flies at this time of year. Flies like the Wool Bugger, Muddler Minnow, Clouser Minnow, Marabou Leech, Black Nosed Dace, and other baitfish imitations fished near the trouts nose, with various swim, and or jerk strip techniques, under the surface with either sink tip lines or sinkers attached to the leader can be effective. Plus, this type of fishing is fun and action packed. Not to mention, the big boys left over from last year, as well as the native fish can get pretty big compared to this years stocked fish.
