Kind of hard to tell you what to do without knowing what kind of finish the bow has and what condition it's in. Lacquer, polyurethane or one of the new catalyzed finishes? Gloss or satin? If it's lacquer or poly, you can run into compatibility issues. Putting a new gloss finish over the oldmight lift the old finish and make it crack and crinkle.
Best bet if the bow has a gloss finish to start with would be to try some good paste wax. Wax it up and buff it real good. If it had a satin finish, you could buff it down with some 0000 steel wool and then wax and polish it.
My ChekMate had a satin finish but I decided I wanted a gloss so, after the warranty expired,I sanded the old finish off and redid it with plain old Birchwood Casy TruOil.

The key is for you not to look as ugly as your bow.
Polish yourself up. If you look good enough, she'll never notice the bow.

I've been doing a little research on Black Hawk bows and haven't come up with much about how old your bow might be. They were made by Cravotta Bros, Inc of East McKeesport, PA,and I found a patent date for them in 1959, but don't have a clue how long they were in business. Last date I saw was 1970. Your bow is an antique, but I don't think it has any collector value based on what Black Hawks have sold for on Ebay - less than $100. Wouldn't hurt to clean it up and maybe refinish it if that's something you'd like to do.

Good luck on impressing her. Ah, to have those types of worries back again.
