No, I don' t think it was. I think that soon from CA we will see a the new world record that will be a wild fish that will just break the record and it will a female full of eggs. but Texas could who know what those biology boys down there are doing. They got the right programs but they are a few years away still. Mexico could if they stocked trout and better forge foods. Also the record smallmouth is a hoax the one from dale hallow. he stuff the fish with lead and motor parts I heard

Its possible there was one taken in CA in 1997 that was 24 pounds I read that in an book published by outdoor life called big bass secrets. There is a picture of it, and let me tell ya it is huge! It not the record cause it wasnt weighed on a certified scale but they are pushing for it cause the scale that it was weighed on was tested and is down to the ounce the fish was witnessed by 4 other people and caught on a 9 inch rainbow trout jerkbait. If some can explian how to post pics I will scan it and post it.

Schuly,

Here is a pic of the questionable 24lb bass caught in California in 1997.

Sag.

Sorry, it says the file is too large.
What is wrong with this D#m* site anyway ?
Archery Talk will allow pics 10 times bigger than this site!!!
Here is a link with a pic of the bass.

OregonHntr,

Looks like there wasn' t enough evidence to suit everyone.
The pic is suspicious to some because he' s holding it away from his body to make it appear larger.
But the main problem everyone seems to have is he released the fish without having proper officials weigh and measure it.
Too bad, if it really was a record!
I have my doubts because, who in their right mind is going to release a million dollar fish ?
You don' t have to kill it, just put in in a live well with plenty of oxygen until it' s officially weighed and measured and then release it if you wish.

I don' t believe the 24 pounder existed. The pic of the fish is dry for one. Next is the body is not folded around his right hand from the 24 pounds of weight witch indacates to me that the pic is of a mounted fish and not a live one. Neither the fish or the guys hands are wet. Where is the boat? I calculate that the fish was 22.5 inches long by the pic. Here is how I did that:

I measured the fish on my screen - 3.75"
I measured the with of his middle finger - .125"
I measured the with of MY middle finger - .75"
Do the math and get 22.5"

I think that most of us have cought a 22 inch bass before and know about how much it weighs. Take into consideration the gerth and the pic still don' t add up to 24 pounds to me.

In my opinion, that pic is of a mounted bass about 16 pounds. Still pretty nice one though
