Default Need some boat motor knowledge..

well,
I fixed my boat motor this morning before work ..BUT I'd like to know why it messed up..PLease write as if you were trying to teach a 5 year old..[8D]appreciate it..

I tested it and knew it wasn't getting gas..I suspected dirt..I was wrong..anyway I unhooked all the the places where the gas hose connected..NO GAS..I fonally took the hose apart from the inline gas tank ..NO GAS.[:-]I ran a piece of weed eatter line up the gas port of the tank..still NO GAS..
My vent cap was already loosened but I lossened it more..then came the gas..now my motor works..

OK can someone please explain in pre school terms how that vent thing works..and why it's in the gas tank anyway..I do know here lately after I run the motor I have to carry a pair of Channel locks to take my gas cap off..

Thanking you all in advance ,
Chuck7

Talked to my step dad..

Smartest mechanic on planet earth..I kid you not..lives to far from me..[&o]

He said.
a.The vent/ vaccum is so that when the motor is stored it won't leak gas out if knocked over.. some lawnmowers have a vent cap as well..

b. If problem happens again..loosen the entire gas tank cap..

Chuck vented caps go to heck all the time. Just replace the cap and you will probly be fine. It is like trying to suck through a straw that is snuffed out on the bottom of a glass.

Chuck, when gas gets old from setting turpentine builds up and blocks the screen in your tank as well as the vent in your cap. When your tank gets empty see if you can put a little rubbing alchol on the screen to break up any turpentine built up on it. If not try and find some cleaner to pur in your tank to clean the screen. But be carefull and not use to much of it as it can be hard on your outboard motor. You maybe able to get something from a boat shop to put in it to do the job. Good luck and try to use some stable when putting it up next time if it is going to set for a while.

Appreciate the feedback fellows,

Phil , I do run my motor at least once a month to keep the seals and rubber parts lubricates and gas from getting old. At least I know now when this happens what it probably is..

Found a site where you can get exploded drawings of your motor and buy an online service manual for your engine if you so desire,

WELL,

My engine still wouldn't start..

a. Had the vent wide open ..
b. I was getting fuel to the carb...but not in the carb,

so I called up my #1 mechanic..my step dad..and he guided me through the following..now it runs..Here's his guidance..
a. Check the plug..ok ..it's dry..you got a carb.problem.
b. Take out drain screw from the bottom of the carb..no gas..[]float is probably hung up
c. Take off carb..and check out float..

YIKES[:@][:@]remember last year when I told you the dealership sabotaged my engine..there was petrolium jelly in it..He slipped it in through the breather hose at the top of carb.[:@]
d. OK the port from the fuel pump to float valve is clogged..I cleaned the carb and sprayed carb cleaner through the float valve and outside of port that leads to fuel pump.
e. Reassembled..Runs like a champ..
Thank you Heavenly Father...and dad.
