Default One more comment about Rooster Tails

After fishing with them today I realized something that I had taken for granted

IMHO the Rooster Tail is one of the toughest lures to fish..you just don't throw it out and reel it in or you will be disappointed and catch nothing..A matter of fact...the blade won't even turn..I've fished for one so much it feels like it's another part of my body....This year I rarely used mine because that is something else I took for granted..it's like a 6th sense..you just know when it's a Rooster Tail day.Today was certainly a Rooster Tail day..It's a new moon and fish were busy..I fished it in heavy cover as well..You kind of know just how deep and how fast to fish it as well..In a sense you actually become that helpless baitfish swimming steady just above the weeds..Remember ..I don't fish a tiny Rooster..A 3/8 ounce is a good 3 inches long..

I recond every lure is like that..it must be fished from the heart and with full confidence..My hackle got ripped to shreds today so after this post I plan to call Cabelas and restock..just called ..I ordered a slate turkey call too..gone crazy today.

yeah they aren't the easiest lure to use. when i started with them a while ago, it took for ever to get used to the speeds. and still when i go from still to moving water fishing them i need to readjust. and the same with the weights i have to readjust.

the speeds are very critical. they cannot be finessed or moved slowly

yeah they aren't the easiest lure to use. when i started with them a while ago, it took for ever to get used to the speeds.same here..I had to fish themin clear water first to watch whatthe lure was doing.Once in a clear pool in VA..I made along castpast a school of about 20 largemouth ..it was neat seeing the largest fish ..about 2 pounds leave the school to engulf my Rooster..and still when i go from still to moving water fishing them i need to readjust. and the same with the weights i have to readjust. i can fish them underhand or blind folded now..I love the feel of the Rooster ..and the best part..it's the best lure I found to keep a constant depth for staying above weeds or for suspended fish..Today I was mostly fishing about 12 inches below the surface..the fish were hungry today. The hackle doesn't seem to hold up as well as they did years ago..I find mine wear out pretty quick..I ordered 6 today from cabelas all white and 3/8 ounce..I need to remember to sharpen the hooks..

the speeds are very critical. they cannot be finessed or moved slowly

The speed is crucial..I do fish slowly..but not real slow..I can't really explain..you just know the right feel when you got it....just fast enough to keep a constant depth..how's that?I've won 3 tounys and the other guys look worried when I bring it out..some call me a cheater because it's so good. ..but they always forget to order their own..Another thing is..they cast a mile..which is good when fish are on the spooky side..I find a good long spinning rod is best with these gems..the extra spring in the rod drives those short trebles in pretty good.
Good luch this year,
C7

yeah i mostly go around fishing neighborhood ponds. and i dont go over 1/8 oz ever. i like the 1/6 but it has to be swam fast and shallow. the thing is im a finesse fisherman. or big action. not much in between for me lol. they do work and i def agree on the hackle. it is some of the worst quality hackle they could use. but hey it catches fish. i also love the panther martins/ i like them more personally. especially the solid silver colored ones. i like the smaller ones too. they tere up the bass, crappie, and bluegill.

I also like Panther Martin and have caught up to 2 1/2 pound bass on them.I've tore up bluegill on them as well..I like this Pather Martin spinner fly. They don't sell any of these in my area..so I had a relative bring me down a load of them from New York...Now these are much easier to fish with than Rooster Tail..I troll these at times when looking for bluegill in deep water.

In Florida, some of out lakes are full of tilapia ..they are kmnown as vegetarians..I think they are wrong as I have caught about 20 trolling with Panther Martins. They must be omnivores.

yeah! i went out twice today. one time with swimbaits and the other with a small silver panther martin.

i threw 2 sizes and colors of swimbaits. lots of chasers and a couple hits( even a channel catfish tried to eat it.) but nothing landed.

this evening i went out again for less time and covered less territory.
Fish count:
Bass Landed=5
Bass Lost=5
Bass Missed=11
Crappie Landed=0
Crappie Lost=1
Crappie Missed=3
Bluegill Landed=2
Bluegill Lost=1
Bluegill Missed=20-30

that was in less than one hour.

I have just about every rooster tail ever made going all the way back to the 50's when there were originally called Wordens Rooster Tails. They are an awesome lure and you cant beat em. Theres not much you cant catch with em.
