What's the big deal with artificial?
#12
If you don't think artificial baits can catch large bass up north just watch some of the FLW or BASS tournaments that are held in the northern swing every year. Those pros clean up and can only use artificial baits. I watch them very closely on Champlain when they are here for practice and the tournaments. Their abilities and the lures and bait selection are top shelf. The fish don’t stand a chance.

cant use live bait in any serious tournament - only reason i need.
Josh..
Also...you can only fish one rod at a time and in some tournaments you can't use a landing net..

If I had the choose either to use the real thing or an artificial lure it would probably be the real deal. But alot of the places that I fish are not all that easy to get to, so I usually stick with artificial and usually successfull doing so. But if Im fishing a creek or near a creek where I can catch my bait, then it would be a different story.

went to the lake missed a buch of fish due to short strikes and had a shiner out that never got touched then i put out a secret lure and caught one and missed a monster in half the time (keep in mind i am fishing another rod) and quite frankly have outfished live bait every time with artificial but do what works but the main reason i never fished it n the past was what josh said

Travis...There's no doubt that leeches are deadly on smallmouths...
They seem to be more of a NORTHERN phenomenon.. I've never heard of anyone using them here in southwestern NY, and don't know any bait shops that carry them, but in places I've fished inOntario they are used a lot, and I know that in your area in the upper midwest they are very popular...They sure do catch fish and they are a fairly trouble free bait too.. They stay alive a long time and don't require much hassle to take care of, unlike minnows/shiners...
Here in NY's Finger Lakes, the most popular live baits for bass are minnows, crayfish, crawlers and hellgramites, known locally as dobson... For river fishing, add stone catfish, known locally as "tonies"...
I'll bet if we could get leeches here they'd work great, also...Probably could catch our own...Do you know how to catch/gather them..??..

goherd1111 I challenge you and the pro angler of your choice to come up to my neck of the woods and try your artificials against my buddy. come on I dare ya.
Another point that has been broughten up is that artificials catch bigger fish. That's not true for the north but I don't know much about southern fishing.

I highly doubt that!!!! Your just not good enough, and instead of learning to use the proper artificial bait at the right time and under the right conditions, you take the easy way out and use live bait. I would almost guarentee you that I could come up to your "neck of the woods" with my artificial and match you 1 to 1 bass fishing.

You artificial boys, just come on up here in mid Jan and try it! Sorry but you need live bait up in this neck of the woods. I do use artificials but always tip it with some form of bait.

you pay for the trip, give me one day to learn the water (dont even need to fish), and I'll take you up on that challenge.
This coming from someone who does use live bait for other species, just not bass - why? because bass are aggressive enough to catch on lures at just about anytime.
