Trout are natural bottom feeders. They feed on top when certain hatches work their way to the surface. Also trout are cold water fish that need cold water to survive (the colder the water, the more oxygen).
Bottom line is if youare notfly fishing, I would still fish the botom. Moving the baitincreases the chances of it being detected by the trout. No harm in trying a bobber a few feet below the surface but using worms, power bait or salmon eggs on the bottom and moving it around slightly every few minutes is the way I would go......Good Luck!

If you are fishing trout and they are feeding of the top, well thats where you fish! If you dont have a fly rod, try a bobber and tie a fly about 3 ft behind it. Cast out and reel in real slow. They will eat it.

I was at this lake, and the fish were jumping all overrrrrr.
When the fish are are jumping they are on top. Get rid of the sinkers, and
try using a small repala or a small weeping willow and keep them moving.
It works for me.
