I spent the weekend fishing an 844 acre lake. out of a 12 foot aluminum sears, with a 50 pound thrsttrolling motor. Heres my problem. Im 17 years old and a seattle native, never had anyone to teach me to fish or hunt, so Im learning on my own, with the help of a few mentors. anyways I was at this lake, and the fish were jumping all overrrrrr. yet I could never catch one or even get a bite. We were using number 9 egg sinkers behind a swivel with abot 4 inches of 3lb leader with a number 8 or 6 hook. with power bait on it. we tried all different power paits, then I tried some mepps lures, and then some rooster tails as well. so my question is what can i do differently? Less wieght for higher up, or more? different stuff. thanks

what state and what lake are you fishing? that lake sounds alot like one we have here in northern arizona.

with your powerbait rig you should use #10 sinker over a barrel swivel with a 18" to 24" inch 2lbs to 4 lbs leader ( 3 lb is fine) with a size 12 to 14 treble hook and just put enough power bait on the hook so that it floats nicely. also you should have several colors of powerbait so you can change colors every 20 or so minutes untill the fish start biting and which ever color they bite that will be the color that should work all day long.

also when fishing power bait its better to be stationary try to keep the boat as still as possible or better yet what i do is beach the boat on the bank and fish power bait from the bank.

then with your mepps and rooster tails use size 1/8 oz or smaller I use alot of 1/16 oz rooster tails. roosters tails and mepps are great lures for trout for casting from a boat. I do alot of trolling with rooster tails let the lure trail behind the boat about 50 to 60 feet and run the boat around the lake at about walking speed ( 1 to 2 mph).

try these things and let me know if it helped you catch some fish.

Same question

1. What are you fishing for? My advice is fish as light and natural as possible. I do not use snap swivels or egg sinkers unless I'm fishing salt water .

also with rooster tails, lets say 1/8 oz, should i add wieght?

No sir.
Do not use any weight with Rooster Tails. I wouldn't even use a snap swivel.

Another great lure for trout is the Panther Martin. Use light line 4 to 6 pound test and a good deep spool for long cast.

If you are fishing trout and they are feeding of the top, well thats where you fish! If you dont have a fly rod, try a bobber and tie a fly about 3 ft behind it. Cast out and reel in real slow. They will eat it.

I like using a snap swivel to keep my line from twisting up and in
your case fishing on the top. I like using a little super duper or a small dare devil with a copper back. This can be trolled slow with your motor.
