RE: Seems alot of people knock Winchesters mod 70..why!!!
Years ago my Dad tried to give me a win pre 64 in 30/06.I tried factory and reloads and just couldn't get it to shoot even reasonabley well.So I gave it back to him and told him to give it to one of my brothers.
Well last year I went a nd bought a win classic in 270wsm,I allready had one in a browning and it really does shoot. Now after trying everything that shoots in the browning and several factory loads it is like the one Dad tried to give me.Haven't got a desent group out of it yet.Even had it bedded. It doesn't matter who made the gun Rem,win or etc,I just want them to shoot well.Going to try more this summer and see if I can find out what the problem is.If I don't get it to shoot will try to sell it to someone else. Been thinking of just getting a 7wsm barrel put on it but now I am afraid that I would have the same problem.I don't think I will put anymore money into another winchester any time soon. |
RE: Seems alot of people knock Winchesters mod 70..why!!!
Herman, i think the barrels are the problem in 90% of it. I have a friend that has 1300 dollars invested in one Model 70 and it is hard pressed to shoot 1" groups. He has changed out everything but the barrel. I had the same problem with a 7mm Rem mag..At the time I didn't reload and I went thru every conceivable factory ammo made at the time. I found 1 out of I don't know how many choices that worked and gave 1 1/2 groups at 100 everything else was 2" or more and 3-4 inches at 200 yards.

ORIGINAL: biscuit jake I haven't tried their coyote model. Would like to hear if someone has one and how it is doing, or has seen it at work in the field or range. Biscuit Jake.I have a Winchester Coyote in 223. All I've ever shot in it was some reloads I loaded back in the early 80's.I was getting 1 1/4" -1 1/2" groups @100 yards.I'm sure with a worked up load it will drive tacks. The trigger was okay but could have been allot better.A friend's uncle who's a retired Smith did the trigger for me. It turned out nice. For shooting old reloads close to 25 years old I was impressed with the Coyote.I put a Weaver V24 on it.It works good however on higher powers the clarity isn't the best.Ruger has the M-77VT which is basically the same as the Winchester. I picked up a used one in 308. I haven't tried it yet.The original owner had done a trigger job on it.That one also came out impressive. Ruger Redhawk |
RE: Seems alot of people knock Winchesters mod 70..why!!!
The Model 70 is my favorite of the big three "affordable" rifles (Remington, Ruger, Winchester). I have owned accurate examples of all three, and I've had lemons from all three companies as well. I prefer the three position safety and the trigger is well built and very easy to adjust.
In the last ten years I've had three heavy barrel Model 70's, two 22-250's and one .243. All would average under 1/4" with handloads. I also had a .270 black shadow that wouldn't do better than 3" at 100 with anything. The bore was so rough on this one, that the fouling was almost impossible to clean. Given my choice, I'd take a Sako or Tikka over anything the U.S. is putting out, but I still prefer the Winchesters over the Remingtons, Rugers, or Savages. |

My bone stock pre-64' model 70 shoots nice little sub 1" groups with my handloads. That's good enough for me. I would much rather have a model 70 than a Rem. 700 because of the features it has that the other doesn't. But all in all, I still prefer my Sakos to any other factory rifle.

I also had a .270 black shadow that wouldn't do better than 3" at 100 with anything. After reading all you guys bashing the Winchester 70, I guess I have a good one. It shoots almost any factory ammo I put through it. Most groups are around 1 inch some go to 1 1/2 at 100, with 150 grain bullets, but the averagefor 130 and 140 grain is closer to the 1 inch mark. I also bought it from Wal Mart Imagine that! Oh and RR your biased anyway! ;) |

RE: Seems alot of people knock Winchesters mod 70..why!!!
Every time I think about a Win M70, I cant help recall what happened to a good friend of mine. This used to be a M70 chambered in 7 Rem Mag.
I'll stick to Remingtons and Rugers...doubleA ![]() |
RE: Seems alot of people knock Winchesters mod 70..why!!!
Never owned a Winchester centerfire rifle until I bought a Model 70 Super Shadow in 270WSM. Great rifle and great round.....3/4 " first time I fired it ( after sighting in cheap scope that came with it }Have owned several Rem 700's, one Savage and 2 Rugers. All very good rifles.:)
