I'd say go with .260rem or 7mm-08, both nice light recoiling cartridges. You can get a NEF handi-rifle single shot for around $200 (I have 2), they are nice little guns. I agree that the 30-30 is also a nice deer gun if you are going to stay within 100-150 yards, but other calibers are more versitle.

Great Gun. Good pick ++
ORIGINAL: North Texan
My recommendations are .243, .25-06, 25 WSSM, .270, and .270 WSM. These are all fairly low on recoil but will kill deer like crazy. My recommendations would be .270 WSM or .270. For deer, this would be my choice. As far as cost, I always try to see what Wal-Mart is charging for price comparison. I refuse to set foot in a Wal-Mart if I don't have to, but it gives me a good idea of what it is probably costing the gun shop.

Speaking of 30-30's I know an used to hunt with a guy from Ohio that was pretty deadly on a right of way with a 30-30. I have seen a few shot with that caliber and it anchored all of them on the spot. Just nothing romantic about it like the magnums and such...but boy does it ever get the job done.

25-06 is a very good one. It shoots fast and flat and hits hard. Not bad on the recoil either. It probably the best Deer and Varmit combo around

RE: low hunting calibers?
I like my 7-08. First one was a model 7 rem. I got rid of that gun fairly quickly for one reason.....the barrel was 20 in. The muzzle jump and muzzle blast was steep. It is amazing what 2 more in of barrel and a little heavier gun will do. I settled on a browning a bolt in 7-08. Have shot numerous deer with it. Even took it elk hunting with 160 grain nosler partitions, though I did not shoot an elk.
The 7-08 allows you to use some pretty nice bullets in the 140 grain range that are store bought. You can also look up conley precision ammunition for some custom loads. I have been shooting the 154 gr hornady round nose on hogs recently.... good medicine.
I also think the 260 would be superior to the 243 and 30-30, as is the 7-08. There is not a deer out there that these two rounds wont dispose of inside 250 yards, with a well placed shot.
