What standard caliber would you get? (.220, .223, .243, .308, .25-06, .22-250)

I want a round that is small and will push a piece of lead to 400 yards without any travel which I know is impossible but?

Say I' m 3" high at 100 and 4 inches high at 300 and dead on at 400 is there anything this flat?

perhaps a .220 swift I know barrel wash is a factor with this gun. What would you choose.

I have a friend with a 7 STW that is attractive but don' t want that gun.

Deer=25-06
Target/woodchuck/prarrie dogs=22-250

You didn' t say what you were going to be hunting. If deer/antelope i would agree 25.06 and if varmits i' ll say 22-250.

Just plinking not hunting. Mostly I want something that won' t kick like a mule and is very accurate. I will be getting a remington just for the action and having Match Grade Arms build a ultra lite out of it.

Most snipers use a .308 caliber that I am aware of is this rifle the most accurate? What caliber do you think for a sniper rifle?

(Just to avoid any confusion when I say Sniper Rifle I really mean an accurate long range rifle like a varmiter but something that will shoot flat as possible.) I was going to have them put a fluted bull barrel and a heavy thumb through stock. Similar to a varmiter.

I won' t be shooting tournaments just want it as a toy.

Building a 400yd utra-lite rifle sniper rifle probably will not give you the accuracy you' re looking for. The under 6lb Ultra lite type rifle normally has a thin barrel, skelatonized action and very light weight hollow stock. None of things are helpfull to have in a rifle when accuracy is the over riding concern. Sniper or varmint rifles usually have heavier contour barrels, solid strong actions and a heavy rigid stock.

A 308 is fine. There are several excellent match grade 30 cal bullets on the market.

Good luck in your pursuit but you' ll likely have to make a few comprises in your new rifle.

I know the compromises will be required specifically the heavy barrel and thumb through stock. Those both are not Ultra Lite material by any means.

Decisions Decisions! I just want to make the right ones for the price this gun will cost.

However I could get by a lot cheaper buying a TC. Which I also want.

Out of all the calibers you mentioned. If they are all sighted for 3" high at 100 yards, they will all be lower at 300 yards than they would be at the 100 yard mark.

mainehunt is there a good balistic' s chart to go by?

I figures at 3" high at 100 yards using 180 grain bullet with a 1903 Springfield at a velocity of 3100fps at the muzzel I should get.

4" high at 200
0" at 300
4" low at 350

Is there anything that can shoot flatter than this.

I guess I need a ballistic chart for all standard calibers.
