most army snipers use a 300 wsm now
I don' t know where you came up with that info but it' s wrong. U.S. Army and Marines use the 308 Win, not a 300 WSM. There were rumors of some 300 Win Mags being used in Vietnam.

The Army does infact have some 300's in their arsenal. Their sniper rifle in 300 is actually a pretty acurate rifle. Although I did like the 308 better. Just my 2 pennies.

The 7.62 NATO (.308 Winchester) is still the most frequently used caliber by snipers in Western Nations. The .300 Winchester Magnum and .338 Lapua are making some inroads for special applications and to a lesser degree standard use. For very paticular applications there are the .50 BMG and at the other end of the spectrum the .300 Whisper. You will also infrequently find 5.56 NATO 7.62 X 54R, 7.5 X 55, and very special circumstances 9mm and .22LR Subsonic.

Nearly anything can be pressed into service and if I were to look at "oddball" or wildcat I might be persuaded to spend and build a nice 6.5/.284 for the purpose!

Good luck in your search!
